Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Instructional Design for Online and Hybrid Learning. Reporting to the Associate Vice President Online Programs, the Director will supervise the team of instructional designers and instructional technologists to ensure the production of courses are both aligned with programmatic outcomes and established design values for instructional programming.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • In coordination with the needs and goals of Deans, chairpersons, and program directors, the Director manages the instructional design team to strategize and advise on the creation and/or use of digital resources and faculty development initiatives to support their educational goals.
  • Conducts outreach to various departments and academic units to make our services known and to build collaborative relationships.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A minimum of a master’s degree.
  • Six years of experience as an educator or instructional designer with at least three of the years’ experience with online program development.
Certifications/Licenses
  • First level (APPQMR) Quality Matters certified.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must demonstrate strong knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating online educational programs as well as models of online program development and delivery.
  • Requires strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work with faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives in the use of technology in the online learning environment.
  • Requires a strong understanding of Canvas Learning Management System and emerging instructional technologies.
  • Requires familiarity with online course quality standards and guidelines, as well as a deep understanding of universal design principles and accessibility issues in online education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • QM Peer Reviewer Certification (highly preferred).
  • Prior teaching experience.
  • Prior employment in an academic setting or experience working directly with higher education staff and/or faculty.

  • Learning Management systems (Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, Blackboard)
  • Video Hosting platforms such as Kaltura

  • Content creation software such as Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline
