Ethnic Studies Assistant Professor

Job Description

Position Summary

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

The Department of Ethnic Studies in the Social & Behavioral Sciences Division of Cosumnes River College invites candidates to apply for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Ethnic Studies to begin Fall 2025. We seek applications from candidates whose research and/or teaching specialization is in any of the following: African American, Asian American, Chicano/a/x, or Native American/American Indian Studies with a focus on: decolonial, transformative, liberation, and/or abolitionist pedagogies and/or community-based activism. We align ourselves with the original visions of the Third World Liberation Front and are committed to building a relevant education that is grounded in community engagement, anti-racism, and solidarity. Ethnic Studies faculty are committed to using intersectional and interdisciplinary frameworks to educate students about decolonization; cultural resistance; embodied knowledge/memory; indigeneities; and critical refugee studies.
Cosumnes River College is an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to equity and the educational attainment of historically marginalized communities. The successful candidate will join a ZTC (zero textbook cost) department dedicated to breaking down institutional barriers to higher education and share Cosumnes River College’s commitment to educating our diverse student population.
 
Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Typical Duties

The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in all levels of Ethnic Studies at the college including: 

  • The core survey African Amercian Studies  (Introduction to Ethnic Studies)
  • Developing curricula in Ethnic Studies
  • Providing leading Ethnic Studies discipline expertise in the development of an Ethnic Studies Associate Degree for Transfer (AD-T)
  • Collaborating with faculty colleagues from across the disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a master’s degree in the Ethnic Studies field; ORa master’s in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies; OR the equivalent*. All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by time of hire. 
  2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
