Job Description

Grand Rapids Community College is seeking candidates to conduct three choral ensembles and teach courses within the discipline of Music. Candidates should possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability; engaging with innovative teaching strategies; assessing student learning outcomes; demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development; and, providing service to our students, the college, and our community at large.

Faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work, as well as associated with the School of Liberal Arts and GRCC as a whole. In addition to the major position responsibility, it is expected that faculty demonstrate outstanding communication skills, collaborate effectively, use personal initiative to overcome obstacles and work efficiently to meet deadlines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct three choral ensembles and teach classes within the discipline of Music.
  • Courses may include, but not limited to applied voice lessons, voice studio classes, Choral Conducting and/or Vocal Diction.
  • Secondary Teaching Area Required: possible teaching opportunities include Music History, Music Appreciation, World Music, American Popular Music, and Aural Skills.
  • Support the development and implementation of teaching techniques that employ technology, flexible learning strategies, group interaction, and innovative teaching practices.
  • Recruit students from the area secondary school districts and GRCC campus community to participate in choral and vocal music at GRCC.
  • Assist the Music Program Director in the evaluation and revision of existing courses and the creation of new courses.
  • Advise students on academic programs and careers related to music.
  • Engage in professional development and continuous improvement related to college teaching, choral conducting, and the field of music.
  • Participate fully as a member of the Music Department in activities such as department meetings, committee membership, textbook selection, and other duties as expected of a tenure-track faculty member and/or as determined by the College.
  • Contribute to the development of students, the department, and the community through involvement in NATS, NAfME, ACDA, and other professional organizations, Department Recitals, and other projects as identified by the department and/or program director.
  • Adhere to the standards and requirements expressed in the Faculty Contract.
  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
  • Effectively assess student performance.
  • Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Masters of Music in Choral Conducting required
  • Preferred: Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Choral Conducting or Master's in Music Education

Work Experience

  • Collegiate teaching experience in the field of music required.
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching music in K-12 schools required.
  • Experience with collegiate level choral conducting required.
  • Community College Teaching Experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of current methods of choral conducting and vocal pedagogy as demonstrated by coursework or practice preferred.
  • Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and with varying academic skills preferred.
  • Experience working with traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds with varying academic skills preferred.
  • Additional experience teaching or the ability to teach any of the following: Music History, Music Appreciation, American Popular Music, Applied Voice, Studio Class, Choral Conducting, Introduction to Music Education.
  • Participation in professional development and/or continuous improvement activities in order to remain current in the field
