About Emotions Matter

Emotions Matter, Inc. is a peer-run non-profit 501(C)(3) organization founded in 2015 with a mission to advocate for, educate, and support people impacted by borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Since its inception, Emotions Matter has served thousands of people across the United States and abroad impacted by BPD to advance recovery through its ground-breaking peer support groups and educational programs, developed and led by volunteers with lived experience.

Emotions Matter has written seven original publications to support recovery, BPD The Facts in Spanish (2024), Peer Strategies for Finding a Therapist to Treat BPD (2022), BPD The Facts (2021), Supporting Students with BPD: A Guide for Professionals, Parents and Students (2019), BPD and Suicidality (2019), Utilizing Single Case Agreements to Access Treatment for BPD: A Strategy to Support Health Care Consumers and Clinicians (2018), Borderline Personality Disorder: In Our Own Words (2017). Emotions Matter has created educational videos through its annual conferences and webinars, which have reached thousands of people worldwide on YouTube.

Emotions Matter was the recipient of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders (ISSPD) 2023 Perry Hoffman Community Service Award for its contributions to the field of personality disorders. Emotions Matter’s BPD Art Shows highlighting artists with lived experience of BPD have been featured on New York Fox News. Its programs have been featured in conference presentations at the American Association of Suicidality, National Alliance on Mental Illness, and National Society for the Study of Personality Disorders. Emotions Matter’s founder, Paula Tusiani-Eng, LMSW, M.Div, has been frequently featured on podcasts, blogs and is the author of numerous articles and contributor to books about BPD.

About the Position

Emotions Matter is growing, and expanding to a new shared management modelto expand our ability to serve the BPD community, build capacity, and transition our organization to the next phase of our growth. We recognize that the traditional Executive Director model often asks too much of one person, so we are dividing the role in an effort to prioritize diverse skill sets, foster collaboration, and work life-balance.

Emotions Matter seeks a new part-time Co-Executive Director for Strategic Growth and Operations to work alongside its founder and current Executive Director, Paula Tusiani-Eng, LMSW, M.Div., who will serve as part-time Co-Executive Director for Program Growth and Development.

The new Co-Executive Director for Strategic Growth and Operations will focus on Emotions Matter’s external growth, including operations, development, strategic partnerships, outreach and communications, while Paula will focus on the internal programmatic growth and management. This is an incredible opportunity for two talented leaders to mesh their unique skill sets together to push Emotions Matter’s excellence and help more people with BPD worldwide.

Both Co-Executive Directors will be responsible to:

  • Lead and inspire the organization to fulfill its vision, mission, and values.
  • Communicate with and work closely with the Board of Directors.
  • Assess and collaborate with the Board to develop a multi-year strategic plan that includes establishing annual goals, plans, objectives, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including donors,volunteers, community partners, and other nonprofit organizations.

Job Responsibilities: Co-Director for Strategic Growth and Operations

Fundraising, Development and Fiscal Governance

● Manage the fiscal integrity of Emotions Matter by developing the annual budget, and setting goals in collaboration with the bookkeeper, Treasurer and Board.

● Develop, implement, and oversee all fundraising events, communications, and community relations activities to generate revenue and advance our mission.

● Cultivate and steward a portfolio of major donors, and develop partnerships with

various constituencies, including corporations, foundations, and individuals.

Marketing, Communications, Outreach & Public Relations

● Design and implement comprehensive marketing strategies to create brand awareness of the organization’s mission and services.

● Work with volunteers and staff to produce valuable content for the organization's online presence, editorial design, and publications

● Engage in community outreach at public events to advance the mission.

  • Support, lead and participate in Emotions Matter’s education or advocacy efforts.

Operations and Staff Management

● Manage the staff and oversee human resources and employment practices

  • Oversee overall administrative policies, systems management, information technology, and procedures for the nonprofit’s day-to-day operations.

● Review and sign all contracts, and agreements entered into on behalf of the organization, ensuring legal compliance with 501c3 federal and state laws.

● Supervise and collaborate with organization staff, contractors, and volunteers.

Skills and Preferred Qualifications

  • An unwavering commitment to Emotions Matter’s mission.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience, preferably with a background in the non-profit sector, management, finance or communications.
  • Proven success as a passionate steward and of responsible fundraising and organization-building.
  • Experience developing and implementing annual budget goals for a $500,000 + operating budget. Knowledge of 501(c)3 or 501(c) 4 preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude that motivate and lead staff, volunteers, the funder base, and the board.
  • Capacity to work effectively with a wide range of cultures and personalities, with an emphasis on inclusivity, hospitality, and compassion working with stakeholders with lived experience of BPD.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively connect with diverse audiences and speak about Emotions Matter’s mission in the community.
  • Experience with communications, marketing and social media.
  • Highly collaborative, with a willingness and ability to be adaptable and flexible, recognize when compromise is necessary for the betterment of the organization.

Education

  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite, Excel, Outlook, Word, and QuickBooks.
  • Grant writing experience is a plus.

Compensation

  • This will be a salaried exempt four days a week position (O.80 of FTE).
  • The position is remote - based anywhere in the United States.
  • The annual salary ranges from $67,000 to $70,000, depending on experience.
  • Generous PTO and 11 paid holidays.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $67,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year

Expected hours: 32 per week
