Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Advising and Student Success Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for campus academic advising functions. The Coordinator reports to the Associate Dean of Advising and collaborates with staff in the Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Financial Aid, and Workforce Solutions departments to create an environment in which students are intentionally engaged in the academic advising process, including but not limited to the development of appropriate career and personal goals, selection of an appropriate academic program, and selection of courses.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work with other campus’ Advising and Student Success Coordinators, under the leadership of the Associate Dean of Advising, to ensure college-wide consistency in academic advising.
2. Oversee daily operations of the campus’ Advising and Student Success Office and supervise campus advisors and support staff.
3. Provide guidance to students in the development of academic plans, selection of courses to meet program, graduation, and transfer requirements and registration procedures by using knowledge of sound academic advising, curriculum/course requirements, and policies and procedures of the admissions/enrollment, business, financial aid and veterans affairs offices.
4. Provide leadership in the development of a college-wide, comprehensive case management academic advising model that assists students in clarifying personal and academic career goals through the use of appropriate student development, human development, and student learning theories.
5. Provide leadership in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as fostering an equitable and inclusive environment, specifically as they relate to advising policies and procedures.
6. Provide leadership in the implementation and support of technologies and applications that support academic advising functions.
7. Develop and maintain appropriate working relationships with students, faculty, and staff college-wide, including colleagues in the Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Financial Aid, and Workforce Solutions departments.
8. Work with the Associate Dean of Advising to develop, implement, and utilize an intrusive communication plan to engage, support, and retain students.
9. Plan, coordinate, and implement virtual and in-person programming and events to promote retention and student success and analyze data to determine their effectiveness.
10. Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of advising strategies through data analysis.
11. Actively participate in state, regional, and national professional development opportunities and organizations, as well as college-wide committees, taskforces, etc.
12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Advising.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge of advising principles, policies, and practices.
2. Ability to work as a team member in a highly complex educational organizational setting.
3. Ability to supervise while motivating assigned staff in designated functional areas.
4. Ability to work with staff from college-wide offices to plan and implement advising, retention, and student success programming and events.
5. Ability to make effective oral and written presentations.
6. Ability to effectively work and communicate with a diverse array of internal and external constituents, ranging from students to administrative personnel.
7. Ability to interpret college policies and procedures; resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance of varying points of view.
8. Ability to interpret data and write/create reports; strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation, and evidence-based planning.
9. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive mission of the community college.
10. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant technology and student information systems and their uses to support student success through comprehensive academic advising.
11. Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, or college student affairs leadership or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
