About the Department

The primary function of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department is to provide educational programs leading to BS, MS and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering. The administrative unit provides support to the education program and the research programs that reside in the department.

Essential Job Duties

The responsibilities include advising both prospective and admitted students on admission requirements, registration, course selection, academic requirements and policies, and other academic issues related to enrollment and student success. The position is expected to be in-person and also to include outreach and recruitment of future students.

Primary Duties:
  • Provide in-person academic advising for undergraduate and Master’s students affiliated with CBE.
  • Maintain records pertaining to academic program of active and inactive BS and MS students, including cooperative education students, CBE minors, study abroad students, transfer students, students on internships, international students, and others.
  • Assist in maintenance of other records as needed, including overload requests, prerequisite issues and changes, CBE 495 special topics, among others.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the CBE Student Ambassador program, and work with other CBE student organizations and advisors as needed.
  • Organize and/or help coordinate graduation ceremonies, senior lunch, and similar events to provide community and recognize the students.
  • Work with the Career Development Center and COE First Year Engineering Program to ensure delivery of student professional development and recruiting events.
  • Partner with alumni who want to provide professional development to students through lunches, classes, and webinars.
  • Lead recruitment and outreach activities, including orientations, welcome events, open houses, and visitation days, as well as recruitment and outreach organized by the College or University.
  • Schedule and coordinate visits of high school students and parents and answer their correspondence concerning our programs.
  • Schedule and reserve classrooms via the ASTRA system for undergraduate and graduate courses and resolve any issues associated with course scheduling, classroom reservations, exam, and test schedules.
  • Solicit and submit textbook requests.
  • Coordinate and/or deliver summer camp programs for high school students.

Other Responsibilities

  • Supervise student workers that work various recruiting, outreach, or open house-type events; potentially supervise student workers that perform job functions associated with student advising and records.
  • Work with Registration and Records, as well as with the Associate Department Head or the Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs, as needed, regarding course and classroom scheduling.
  • Work with other CBE staff on student and other departmental events.
  • Provide administrative support for the main office, as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree + at least 3 years of relevant experience or graduate degree.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and excellent time management
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate and MS advising
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a varied array of personalities under pressure and deadlines
  • Maturity and ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages in a confidential environment
  • Ability to understand and follow policies, rules, and procedures, such as those pertaining to student records
  • Excellent communication skills: oral, written, and presentation skills, including making presentations to groups at different levels (children, high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and parents)
  • Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills
  • Ability to effectively manage large student caseloads

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience advising students at a college level or experience directly related to the discipline
  • Familiarity with North Carolina State University undergraduate academic programs and policies
  • Familiarity with Student Information Systems (SIS)
  • Background in a science/engineering discipline, counseling, education, or in academic advising
