Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively searching for a Civil or Structural Engineer who specializes in the advanced structure finite element analysis field. As the successful new hire, your position will include management, supervision and training of junior structural engineering staff and will be responsible to lead engineering, planning, design, and analysis activities for for heavy infrastructure to include: marine structures, bridges, tunnels, and buildings projects. You will be client facing and will responsible for business development. You may be seated Moffatt & Nichol's Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Oakland, San Diego, or Walnut Creek, CA office or work at home.

You will have existing relationships, or can develop relations, with clients including NAVFAC, Ports, Metro, Caltrans, BATA, BART or other similar clients and are known and respected in the field of finite element analysis. Types of analysis you would be involved in includes: soil structure interaction, concrete cracking, nonlinear time history analysis, nonlinear behavior of materials, the modeling of nonlinear behavior of materials, and constitutive modelling. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Project management and senior project engineer duties
  • Attend and lead client meetings including development of meeting minutes
  • Build relationships with existing and new clients and interface between Moffatt & Nichol, clients and subconsultants
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Actively participate in initiatives to grow the team as required through hiring staff
  • Supervise, support, and train advanced structure analysis team
  • Prepare and lead projects pursuits / opportunities including positioning, team building, proposal writing, interviewing and contract negotiation
  • Lead the development of structural analysis, modeling, capacity calculations and calculation reports
  • Lead the development of contract documents for various project delivery methods including drawings, specifications, basis of design, technical reports, technical memorandums, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, project and construction schedules, etc.
  • Perform periodic site visits and attend client meetings as required
  • Lead the implementation of quality control and quality assurance on projects
  • Coordinate closely with business managers and technical leaders in the company to advance initiatives
  • Coordinate with coastal, civil, transportation, mechanical, electrical, construction, inspection, permitting/environmental and other disciplines
  • Manage subconsultants and construction services throughout project lifecycles

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; required
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering; required
  • Doctorate in Structural Engineering with emphasis in Advanced Analysis; highly preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in the State of California; required
  • Structural Engineer (SE) licensure in the State of California; highly preferred
  • 15+ years of related structural finite element analysis experience in engineering design, project management, and client service; required
  • Proficiency with finite element software such as ABAQUS (preferred), LSDYNA, ADINA, NASTRAN, or other similar software; required
  • Knowledge with nonlinear concrete behavior and effects of concrete due to time dependent effects; required
  • Experience in soil structure interaction, concrete cracking, nonlinear time history analysis, nonlinear behavior of materials, the modeling of nonlinear behavior of materials, and constitutive modelling for related structures; required
  • Experience with seismic and finite element analysis of heavy infrastructure to include: transportation, rail, tunnels, marine structures, bridges and/or buildings
  • Knowledge of International Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, AISC Steel Construction Manual and Seismic Design Manual
  • Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications with Caltrans amendments, or other state DOT requirements
  • Willingness and availability to travel for projects on occasion
  • Eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:

  • $150,000 to $200,000 based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualifications in job description.
  • Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in California markets.

Working conditions:

This position works primarily in an office setting; some client and field visits and occasional out-of-state travel to other M&N offices.

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Some occasional travel may be required.
