As NC State’s central office and authoritative source for institutional reporting and analytics, Institutional Strategy and Analysis (ISA) supports the university’s strategic decisions, planning activities, operations, evaluation efforts, and accountability by providing consistent, reliable information and analysis to university leaders, administrators, faculty and staff, students, external stakeholders, and the public.

In carrying out its mission, ISA:
  • Collects, analyzes, interprets, models, and reports information about NC State
  • Manages institutional strategic planning, including implementation planning and metrics for the university strategic plan
  • Provides leadership in governance and strategy with respect to the university’s academic and administrative data
  • Administers, analyzes, supports, and oversees institutional surveys
  • Supports, administers, and maintains applicable data structures, applications, and systems

University Data and Analytics (UDA) is a unit within ISA that is responsible for NC State’s university-level data and analytics function, including data governance, institutional analytics, and analytics enablement.

Essential Job Duties

The Institutional Reporting Lead oversees the Institutional Reporting Team in providing internal and external reporting for NC State University. The Institutional Reporting Lead will serve as a contact for institutional data both with campus stakeholders and the UNC System Office and will help support efforts to ensure successful and accurate completion of the institution’s reporting needs.

The Institutional Reporting Lead will provide effective guidance and support to the Institutional Reporting Team in University Data and Analytics (UDA) and work collaboratively with UDA leadership, campus partners, and stakeholders to support continuous improvement of processes and outcomes of institutional reporting.

The Institutional Reporting Lead will join the UDA team and report to the Senior Director, Institutional Analytics. 

Additional duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain understanding and expertise in the content, usage, application, and integration of institutional data—curricular, financial, human resources, space, student, and others—and leverage that expertise in the provision of reporting services and solutions.
  • Collaborate internally within University Data and Analytics (UDA) to prepare responses to the System Office on institutional reporting and datamart issues (including student, human resources, and financials).
  • Assist Research and Analysis, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Data Governance, and other ISA teams with data and reporting needs and contribute to cross-functional and/or cross-organizational project teams as directed.
  • Supervise 3-4 Institutional Analyst positions and provide effective leadership to the Institutional Reporting team, allocating tasks in an equitable manner that promotes team building and continued enhancement of reporting expertise and services.
  • Monitor Institutional Analysts performance, provide constructive feedback and coaching, and complete work plans to ensure team and departmental goals.
  • Ensure provision of accurate, consistent, and comprehensive responses that represent NC State to external surveys such as IPEDS, Common Dataset, AAUP faculty salary survey as well as national and international rankings surveys.
  • Improve the effectiveness of the Institutional Reporting function of UDA through continuous evaluation and assessment of processes and outcomes.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet UDA or university goals and objectives.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
  • 1‐2 years of supervisory experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • The ability to interpret and transform data into relevant and usable information
  • Experience using analytical or statistical applications to clean, transform, and analyze data
  • Knowledge of and experience with statistical concepts and techniques
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to assess strengths and weaknesses of information sources, data, and other reporting analysis resources and products
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, presentation, and interpersonal communications
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Self-motivated, with high standards for rigorous and detailed work
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others in a team environment
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and new subject areas
  • Desire to learn about institutional research and higher education organizations
  • Knowledge of national higher education issues and trends and related to institutional reporting and uses of institutional data
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive or controversial issues
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn NC State (data governance, academic structure and campus infrastructure, protocols, policies and procedures)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and strict deadlines while maintaining a high degree of accuracy
  • Familiarity with complex, decentralized research institutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with analytics-related programming languages (such as SAS, SQL, Python, R).
  • Experience working in higher education, especially at a public research institution, or complex government or non-profit organization.
  • Experience managing analysts or other data-related roles.
