Job Description
Great Basin College is seeking highly qualified individuals for a full-time, tenure-track English, instructor position at its main campus in Elko, Nevada. Teaching excellence is the primary requirement and instructional responsibilities are to teach a variety of in-person and distance education English courses, with an emphasis on corequisite and first-year college English courses. This individual will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in Literature. A teaching background in composition and literature is required, with experience teaching or academic specialization in world literature preferred.
 
Great Basin College has a mission to serve the higher education needs of rural Nevada, and as such, teaching requires extensive use of distance education technology. Experience with Canvas LMS platform and synchronous video delivery is preferred. The start date is August 2024.
 
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a master’s degree in English is required; a Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
  • College-level teaching experience in teaching composition and literature is required.
  • A background or specialization in world literature, especially contemporary world literature, is preferred.
  • Experience using distance-delivery technologies.
  • Willingness to teach dual enrollment courses and students is essential. Experience teaching dual enrollment is preferred.
  • A student-centered teaching philosophy that encompasses design, delivery, and assessment.
  • An understanding of various levels of preparation and learning styles represented in the typical classroom.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Commitment to the college mission.
  • Perform all duties as required of all full-time tenured track GBC faculty, such as, non-instructional duties: advising students, committee work, and department duties as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members of the department and college in pursuing departmental and institutional goals with a genuine spirit of cooperation, and flexibility in a diverse college setting.
  • Instructional development, delivery and assessment of assigned courses.
  • Teach a combination of day, evening, and distance delivery classes (interactive video and Internet) as needed to serve the GBC service area
  • Handle administrative duties related to teaching and program development including strategic planning and assessment.
  • Accept responsibility for professional and personal growth
  • Participate in college wide and other committees as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Travel
The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.
 
Compensation Grade
Academic Faculty Grade 3
The budgeted salary range for this position is $46,691 - $70,000
Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee’s spouse or domestic partner.

Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment. Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
 
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Any expense related to the evaluation will be the responsibility of the candidate.
 
Background Check
