Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Communications Coordinator plays a pivotal role in advancing the visibility and reputation of the Department of Government and Politics including their centers, labs and academic/professional programs.

This position will be responsible for developing and executing communication strategies to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders. The Communications Coordinator will collaborate closely with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to promote the department’s initiatives, achievements, and events through various channels.

Essential job duties will include:

  • Undergraduate Student Engagement
  • Outreach and Communications
  • Website, departmental email and social media support

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • A Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Three years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, or except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credit being equivalent to one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to craft compelling and accurate content for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media management in a professional or volunteer capacity, content management systems, and email marketing software.
  • Experience with any Web Content Management System.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations in a higher education or academic setting,
  • Understanding of issues and trends in higher education and academia.
  • Background in Government and Politics
  • Familiarity with social scheduling/management tools such as Hootsuite.
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles and experience with design software/platforms (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva).
  • Experience with Drupal, Sharepoint, Wix, and/or Joomla.
  • Experience pitching stories to external media, and/or some level of experience liaising with external media.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Repetitive motion. Substantial movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, and to walk short distances to deliver and pick up materials. Must have a valid driver’s license be able to walk and stand for long periods of time, in order to meet the needs of the event. Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
