Essential Job Duties

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative professional with a passion for food, nutrition and wellness to serve as the public communications specialist (marketing communications manager) for NC State Dining. The incumbent will have proven leadership experience and be capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.

This position has direct responsibility to develop and implement marketing and communication plans to promote the department’s dining locations and services. This includes the dining halls, restaurants, and convenience stores/markets as well as the various program features, such as culinary excellence, nutrition and sustainability.

The position supervises a marketing coordinator. It reports to the director of strategic marketing and communication and is a part of the Campus Enterprises marketing and communication team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Marketing 
  • Ability to create and execute strategic marketing plans for NC State Dining, which includes planning and scheduling all print publications, electronic media, outreach activities, and website development projects. 
  • Establish and implement short and long range marketing goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and effect changes required for improvement.
  • Assist with the development and creation of marketing assets in collaboration with full-time creative professionals on staff.
  • Coordinate activations and outreach activities with internal stakeholders, vendors and campus departments.
  • Maintain brand standards for department and university.
  • Advise dining’s senior leadership on complex marketing and communication issues to ensure our dining program presents strong, cohesive brand to its constituencies. 
  • Develop budget requests for communications programs. 
  • Knowledge of print and signage standards and materials.

Branding 
  • Develop a consistent brand image for department that is innovative and dynamic and reflective of NC State Dining in all pieces.
  • Conceptualize, execute and oversee the creation of all marketing, communications and print materials on behalf of NC State Dining according to the brand standards.

Technology 
  • Manage and update websites as needed using WordPress.
  • Manage the electronic billboard platform for the division and departments.
  • Support mobile app promotion.
  • Dissemination email communications through Mailchimp.

Public Relations 
  • Write and edit news releases.
  • Pitch stories to campus paper and trade publications.
  • Present at orientation sessions and participate in informational zoom sessions.
  • Manage NC State publicity and informational matters, both written and web formats, with other public and private agencies and organizations.
  • Work with news services across campus to ensure exposure and information dissemination of programs, services and facilities.
  • Direct, develop and implement communication strategies to obtain desired results; regularly assesses strategies and re-direct efforts that are ineffective.

Project Management 
  • Articulate and prioritize deliverables in project management system and provide regular communication with stakeholders to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that projects are entered in the system and tracked for assessment purposes.
  • Assign tasks and deadlines to marketing coordinator, graphic designer, student employees, with clear instructions to ensure their tasks can be completed in a timely manner.

Communication 
  • Develop and implement marketing and public relations programs by working with the directors to establish goals and target audiences, then execute through a variety of media including print, websites, social media, special events, and promotions. Write and edit news releases, newsletters, articles, brochures, advertisements, social media posts and other marketing materials. 
  • Apply AP and university brand guidelines to all written materials, with a particularly strong knowledge of culinary terminology.

Other Responsibilities

  • Model the Division’s mission and values, and foster a positive, cohesive workplace and congeniality among co-workers.
  • Understand the goals and culture of the organization, and understand how employees’ work activities, teamwork, and customer service impact clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the Division of Campus Enterprises business needs are met.
  • Position may need to travel to NC State Dining units using an NC State vehicle.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience, which may include applicable internship experience.
  • At least three years of combined professional and internship experience relevant to requirements for the position.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, writing, and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience developing and implementing marketing strategies using a variety of media with an emphasis on social media.
  • Proficiency with editing in Adobe graphic design suite including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Experience with web content management systems.
  • Experience in email marketing systems; experience with MailChimp a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and best practices in marketing and communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, develop partnerships and work effectively as a member of a fast-paced, results-oriented team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success managing, supervising, and mentoring student employees.
  • Demonstrated interest in hospitality, culinary and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and developing leaders through practical application and learning.

  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
