Responsibilities*
Communications
Develops, writes, and edits content for print and digital channels, including:
Multiple articles and news stories each week
Student-focused communications and newsletters
Departmental brochures and publications
Annual reports
Manages departmental social media channels, including:
Twitter/X
Drafts, edits, and helps to maintain departmental website content.
Supports internal communications efforts and the maintenance of a department intranet as needed.
Supports outreach to alumni and other stakeholder groups as needed.
Marketing
Assists in the planning, coordination, and distribution of departmental marketing communications and materials.
Supports the implementation of marketing strategies and assists with measurement, research, and analyses.
Assesses effectiveness of ongoing communications tactics (social strategies, email campaigns) and makes adjustments as needed.
Departmental Obligations
Liaises with student groups to stay abreast of student-related news and to support ongoing student group efforts.
Attends departmental Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee meetings to represent the MarCom team.
Shares and supports departmental events as needed.
Represents the department in the U-M College of Engineering's community of communicators, as well as the university community.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-2 years of experience in marketing and communications.
Avid user of social media.
Familiar with email marketing and social media management clients such as MailChimp,
Constant Contact, or Sprout
Excellent writing skills
Familiarity with AP Style guidelines
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team and to exercise diplomacy in working with faculty, alumni, donors, and other professionals
Ability to manage competing deadlines
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively through a variety of mediums
Experience with basic office and publishing tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, and InDesign
Desired Qualifications*
Experience in a higher education setting
Experience translating technical engineering concepts into broadly understood language
Work Schedule
This is a 32 hour per week position.
Work Locations
The Aerospace Engineering Department operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a Mobile position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 0-1 days per week. May require additional days on-site during peak periods as needed.
