As a Research Computing & Instrumentation Engineer at the University of California, San Diego Professional Schools, you will play a crucial role in providing technical expertise, support, and innovation to our research computing and instrumentation efforts. You will collaborate with researchers, IT teams, and laboratory specialists to ensure the efficiency, reliability, and advancement of our research technology infrastructure.

Skills, Abilities & Responsibilities

Systems Engineering:

  • Design, implement, and maintain complex computing and instrumentation systems to support scientific research.
  • Ensure the availability, performance, and security of research computing and instrumentation infrastructure.
  • Exceptional macOS administration experience; experience with Windows & Linux platforms (server & client)

Collaboration and Support:

  • Collaborate with researchers, laboratory specialists, and IT teams to understand their computing and instrumentation needs and provide technical support and solutions.
  • Facilitate the integration of computing and instrumentation resources into research projects. Including but not limited to managing vendor relationships.

Software Development:

  • Develop and maintain custom software tools and scripts to enhance research computing and instrumentation capabilities.
  • Optimize existing software applications for improved performance.

Data Management:

  • Manage research data storage, backup, and retrieval solutions to ensure data integrity and availability.
  • Implement data security and compliance measures, including HIPAA and other relevant regulations.
  • Adhere to the security principles as published by the Health Sciences Chief Security Officer.

Instrumentation Support:

  • Provide technical expertise in maintaining, configuring, and troubleshooting laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure instrumentation meets research requirements.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance:

  • Investigate and resolve technical issues related to research computing and instrumentation systems and infrastructure.
  • Conduct routine system and instrument maintenance to enhance performance and security.

Documentation and Training:

  • Create and maintain technical documentation for research computing and instrumentation systems and procedures.
  • Provide training and support to researchers, laboratory specialists, and team members to maximize system and instrument utilization.

Project Management:

  • Lead or participate in research computing and instrumentation projects, from planning and design to implementation and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and deadlines.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Related experience: Research computing, instrumentation support, scientific instrumentation support experience or a related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficiency in systems engineering, including hardware and software setup, configuration, and maintenance.

  • Programming skills and experience with software development in languages such as Python, C++, or Java.

  • Knowledge of data management, backup, and security protocols, including HIPAA/FERPA compliance.

  • Familiarity with laboratory instruments and equipment used in scientific research.

  • Exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with researchers, laboratory specialists, staff and IT teams.

  • Project management experience and the ability to lead and execute technical projects.

  • Vendor support experience.

  • Support experience with: macOS, Windows, Linux.

  • ServiceNow experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
