Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Success & Sparks Campus, the employee provides coaching and intervention techniques and is committed to student learning by ensuring student access to programs and services. The employee helps to remove barriers to student enrollment and progression and supports and assists students with achieving their educational goals. The employee provides advisement and advocacy for low-income and first-generation pre-college program participants in the target high schools regarding education, career, and financial aid needs. The employee develops and conducts workshops and program activities, contributing to developing and implementing program goals and objectives. The Success Coach assists with providing outreach, mentoring, advising, instructional and support services. The employee is also responsible for completing monthly progress plans for program participants in the targeted high schools and preparing program participants to enter and succeed in postsecondary education and the workforce.

POSTING DATE: FEBRUARY 23, 2024

SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E3 03 (range: $44,333 - $61,480). This is a grant-funded position. In the event that funds for this position are discontinued, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure or non-probationary status may be attained in this position.

ANTICIPATED START DATE: APRIL 1, 2024

The position will be based initially at the Sparks Campus in Eufaula.

More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Success Coach Advising. Assists low income and first-generation students in identifying their values, interests, abilities, and in clarifying their academic and career goals.

  • Identifies and selects participants.
  • Prepares and conducts student success workshops in target schools.
  • Advises and sets academic, personal, and career goals with participants.
  • Completes an academic progress plan for each participant.
  • Provides participants with course selection information.
  • Maintains regular personal contact with participants enrolled in the Success Coach project to discuss any personal, academic, financial, career exploration, and other problems they are experiencing.
  • Advises and assists participants with needed academic support services.
  • Refers any counseling problems for review and assistance.
  • Remains familiar with postsecondary technical educational requirements and current career information and trends to properly advise participants on a suitable career tech path.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Success Coach Cultural Enrichment and Community Involvement. Conducts and participates in programs and events to enhance participant success.
  • Develops, plans, and conducts cultural enrichment and other project activities.
  • Visits all participating target schools and consults with school representatives regularly concerning progress of participants.
  • Accompany participants on cultural enrichment activities and career fairs.
  • Conducts recruitment activities within the community (provides information packets, visits target schools, attends open houses and community events, and collaborates with local agencies).
  • Participates in planning and implementing industry tours.
  • Provides public relations, promotional activities, and coordination with WCC departments, target school personnel, and community organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Program Operations. Performs program activities to ensure efficient, high quality services are provided to students.
  • Generates and maintains comprehensive participant records to document personal growth and academic progress.
  • Monitors academic progress of participants each grading period through report card checks.
  • Coordinates target school visits with school personnel.
  • Maintains contact with high school counselors concerning participant progress.
  • Receives and checks completed application packets.
  • Coordinates with parents to schedule intake interviews.
  • Conducts interviews with applicants and parents.
  • Monitors school system calendars for upcoming events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Performs a productive full day’s work.
  • Ensures that service to students and the general public is top priority.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • Two years of full-time experience in a secondary or post-secondary educational setting is required.
  • Experience working with low-income, first-generation clientele is required.
  • Current and valid driver's license with the ability to travel is required.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and extended hours as necessary is required.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
 The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interviews, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.

Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.

PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
