Summary

The Student Accounts Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and implementing all activities of the Student Accounts department.  These activities include student billing, third-party billing, collections, refunds, and cashiering.  The manager provides appropriate guidance, direction, and training to the Student Accounts team to ensure professional communications, interactions, and work products.  The manager ensures the integrity and accuracy of individual student accounts and overall cash management.  The manager collaborates with other university leaders in the development and implementation of policies and procedures as well as maintaining appropriate internal controls to ensure financial and regulatory compliance. The manager assists the department in troubleshooting issues and addressing customer service requests from the university?s One-Stop student service center.   
The manager reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs / Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The manager collaborates with the CFO to develop the strategic vision for the department with a focus on developing a continuous quality improvement culture that seeks innovation to improve efficiency and effectiveness.   
 

Responsibilities*

  • Manages the daily operations and staffing of the Student Accounts department.
  • Ensures accurate and timely billing of all student charges and posting of payments, including current receivables, third party billing, and collection accounts placed with Ann Arbor Student Loan Collection.
  • Supports the university?s One-Stop student service center with assisting students and their families with inquiries related to their accounts and payments.
  • Oversees disbursement of federal, private and institutional financial aid and ensures compliance with related University, State, and Federal policies and regulations.
  • Hires, trains, and mentors employees on the Student Accounts team to ensure efficient and professional interactions with students, families, faculty and staff.
  • Oversees the timely generation of student 1098-T statements and the annual filing with the IRS
  • Develops and documents procedures and policies in the cashiering and student billing functions.
  • Assists with the calculation of the allowances for bad debt for outstanding student receivables
  • Ensures compliance with university, State and Federal regulations including compliance with PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) in safeguarding sensitive cardholder data and compliance with the GLBA (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) in safeguarding sensitive data.
  • Develops, monitors, and evaluates cashiering procedures.
  • Manages and ensures completion of various monthly and annual reconciliations related to AR.
  • Manages and keeps secure the university?s petty cash funds and oversees cash management.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Required bachelor degree in accounting, finance, or related field or equivalent plus 5-8 years experience in accounting or similar function.
  • Preferred 1-3 years of management/leadership experience.
  • Ability to plan, manage, and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to establish departmental goals and objectives and measure the department?s success toward achievement.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service with professional, helpful, and positive demeanor.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in order to effectively interact with a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, delegate, and complete assigned duties and responsibilities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle and process confidential and sensitive student financial information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and applicable Federal and state regulations and guidelines.
  • Excellent skills in analytical problem-solving and decision-making.
