Department Purpose
The mission of the Natural Resource Department at Pueblo Community College is to Forestry and Natural Resources are vital to a successful future with an ever-changing climate, expanding wildfires, loss of native species, and habitat destruction. There is also an increased demand for a skilled workforce as the current experts prepare to retire. PCC will meet these challenges and provide a quality education toward a rewarding career, where you can be part of the change.

Summary
Provide student-centered instruction for the Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources (NRE) program in the classroom and field. Teaching responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following areas: organize and deliver practical and technical instruction, including lectures, labs and field study in the subject areas of forestry, wildlife, range, GIS and natural resources; develop student skills including the safe use of tools and equipment related to the Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources industries; work in close partnership with the community as well as with other programs and faculty on campus to develop and maintain curriculum that is current and based on a changing job market and industry standards. Provide program leadership and adherence to accreditation standards. Engage in student recruitment, conduct assessments, select texts and collect student follow-up data.
 

Effectively work with and accommodate students with varying levels of experience and special needs. Foster a safe learning environment in the classroom and in the field. Facilitate learning through the use of real-life on-campus and off-campus field/lab activities. Facilitate learning through use of structured and student-centered projects. Teach job readiness skills: i.e. writing skills, presentation skills, team-building, professional work ethics and conflict resolution skills. Teach skills directly related to entry level jobs in forestry, wildlife and natural resources: i.e. plant and animal identification, forest inventory techniques, habitat assessments, etc. Use multiple and effective delivery styles in classroom and lab to communicate instructional material. Demonstrate commitment to cooperation, consensus building, teamwork, collaboration, and effective goal setting with other instructors and administrators. Contribute to department, campus, and college activities and initiatives as assigned.

 
This position has been identified by Pueblo Community College as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Department of Education guidelines. As a Campus Security Authority, the incumbent in this position is required to report crimes that they become aware of to the Department of Public Safety at Pueblo Community College and must attend annual training related to these responsibilities.

 

Job Duties

 

Essential Functions
  • Teaches courses as assigned within faculty work load guidelines and meets all scheduled classes unless the class has been canceled or with the permission of the Chairperson.
  • Attends all regularly scheduled department, division, and college meetings/trainings as required by contract, unless these meetings conflict with a scheduled class or unless the faculty member is excused by their Chair/Supervisor or Dean.
  • Serves as a substitute within the program for absent colleagues for short-term absences as determined by the Department Chair, Coordinator, or Dean.
  • Maintains a work schedule as agreed upon by the supervisor and in concert with the state and faculty workload policy (at least a forty-hour work week with a minimum of 24 hours on campus, which can include co-ops or off-campus assignments).
  • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours (a minimum of five per week) for consultation or advisement with students.
  • Performs student advisement and registration responsibilities professionally and accurately.
  • Adopts, implements, and supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategies throughout the Division, including Equity-Minded Teaching and Culturally-Relevant Pedagogy
  • Provides adequate preparation of the course material for all assigned courses.
  • Supervises and enforces appropriate safety procedures.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the approved program curriculum and syllabi and participates in cooperative planning with colleagues.
  • Assists with training of instructors and with the preparation of materials for them.
  • Participates in college-wide assessment of student learning activities and/or projects.
  • Assists in program reviews and evaluation process required by internal/external sources.
  • Assists in marketing, recruitment, and retention activities.
  • Serves on and contributes to a minimum of one college committee or special task force per academic year after the first provisional year and represents the college in the community as requested.
  • Participates in graduation ceremony.
 

In addition, faculty are expected to participate in the following service areas according to the needs of their department, campus, and the college. The specific assignments and extent of this participation will change annually, but faculty must be available for and engage in service as determined in consultation with their supervisor(s).

 
  • Provides leadership and instructional integrity through instructional observation, mentoring, and evaluation of instructors.
  • Participates in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
  • Participates in student advising. This may include reviewing and recommending appropriate action on student transcripts, transfers, early graduation audits, and graduation applications.
  • Meets with and updates advising office; updates and maintains advising materials.
  • Develops and participates in college marketing efforts, student recruitment, and retention strategies for all instructional programs.
  • Assists with prior learning assessment.
  • Serves on college committees and/or task forces.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to assemble and execute a strategic plan for department initiatives, including industry recommendations and resource management.
  • Participates in state-level teams and projects, as appropriate.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools, supplies, and storage/disposal of hazardous materials required for classes, and requests appropriate equipment repair.
  • Identifies budgetary needs and priorities; recommends appropriate purchases of technology, equipment, and supplies.
  • Facilitates, coordinates, and supervises internships and clinical experiences for students and initiates contracts with providers.
  • Serves as a faculty advisor to student clubs and activities.

Additional Functions
In addition to faculty responsibilities, faculty are also expected to support and assist with student orientations, advising, and registration. Absences will be minimal and only for appropriate cause; notification of supervisor is required. Faculty must provide coverage or obtain approval for class cancellation according to PCC policy. Two personal days per year are available with approval. Refer to PCC Operational Procedures and Protocols for further information.
 

Engages in ongoing professional development in the areas of active learning and cultural competency.
 

Faculty are expected to model professionalism in dress, action, and communication. Accordingly, faculty are obliged to respond professionally to constructive feedback and to follow the chain of command in resolving conflicts.

 
Faculty must adhere to the laws, policies, procedures, rules, and applications which govern and affect the college, including the fiscal rules of the State of Colorado.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education:

  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college/university in Natural Resources Education or a closely related field with 18 credit hours in Natural Resources

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possess, or have the ability to qualify for, a Colorado Career and Technical Education (CTE) Credential

Experience:

  • Experience teaching in a formal or an informal setting and/ or experience in a natural resources career that required skills in sampling, inventory, or management of natural resources.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Strong computer usage, media and internet skills
  • Familiar with basic equipment used in the natural resources career fields such as forest measurement tools, chainsaws, wildlife sampling equipment, and technical tools such as GPS.
  • Experience with the safe operation of ATV’s and heavy equipment operation
  • Experience working or partnering with multiple organizations
