The primary responsibility of this individual is to provide quality instruction to Western students enrolled in Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), high school equivalency certification (HSC) preparation, and Option III high school credit recovery courses taught at the College and Career Readiness at the Big Piney Outreach location and online. This individual must be able to relate to adult learners who are native speakers, as well as to those whose first language is not English. This position is 5-19 hours per week. This position may include a combination of day and evening hours primarily during college school year.

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner, and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.

1. Provides quality instruction to students enrolled in Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), HSC preparation and Option III high school credit recovery courses.

2. Provides quality learning experiences for all students in accordance with their needs and abilities while maintaining the basic integrity of the course’s standards and objectives.

3. States clear objectives and criteria in each course syllabus; follows the Curriculum Committee’s guidelines regarding course syllabi; integrates appropriate Western Wyoming Community College (Western) Goals for Student Success into each course; evaluates students’ performance in light of these objectives and criteria.

4. Teaches courses in a variety of environments and modes as required. Courses may be offered in the fall, spring or summer semesters and on varying schedules (i.e., 7- or 15-weeks), and may meet during the day, evening, or online in Rock Springs or at one of Western’s outreach centers.

5. Designs and implements effective learning processes for students; provides feedback on student improvement in attaining the College’s Learning Goals. Tracks student progress and grades student work. In addition, helps students maintain a schedule to complete work in a timely manner.

6. Learns to communicate clearly and effectively using the college network system, including the e-mail and calendar system, Canvas, and word processing; integrates learning with technology into the classroom as appropriate.

7. Refers students to the resources in the College and Career Readiness, Peer Tutoring, Hay Library, Mustang Success, and Wellbeing and Accessibility.

8. Maintains an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies in assigned areas; takes prudent efforts to safeguard Western physical resources from unauthorized use. Maintains safe working conditions and practices.

9. Submits syllabi, student evaluations, grades, transcripts, and other required information in a timely manner.

1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, TESOL, or related area.

2. Knowledge of appropriate accommodations for learning disabilities for testing.

3. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

4. Ability to teach a diverse group of adults with diverse needs and learning abilities.

5. Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship.

6. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues and to develop effective working relationships with students and staff.

7. Experience in using computer-based instruction.

For those candidates who do not exactly meet all minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be accepted.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)

1. Master’s Degree in Education or related field.

2. Strong background, including teaching experience and coursework, in Adult Education, Education or related field.

3. Experience using participatory learning techniques and active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.

4. Demonstrated teaching excellence at a community college.
