Position Title

Adjunct Faculty - Music Studies (Music Education, Composition, History, and Theory)

Position Description

The Department of Music Studies (areas: Music Education, Composition, History, and Theory) at Westminster Choir College of Rider University seeks adjunct instructors in Music Theory to teach one musicianship course (TH141 or TH142) and likely also a second analysis course (TH452 or TH623) on a topic of interest to the candidate in coordination with the department’s other courses.  These courses would be for the 2024 Fall Semester with classes beginning Wednesday, September 04, 2024.

Course Descriptions:

TH141: Musicianship I     4.5 Credits   (MWF 8:00-9:00 lecture; T 8:00-9:30 lab)
This course assists students in learning and integrating aural, performance, analytical and composition skills involving diatonic melody and harmony. Both the theoretical and the practical portion must be passed individually in order to receive a passing grade. 
 
TH142: Musicianship II    4.5 Credits   (MWF 8:00-9:00 lecture; T 8:00-9:30 lab) 
A continuation of TH 141 involving chromatic melody and harmony with an introduction to binary and ternary form. 
 
TH 452 Analytical Studies II      3 Credits      (Topic TBD; 3 credits; MWF 1:00)
An in-depth analytical study of a select body of tonal music to be determined by the instructor. The music, which will contain a more advanced harmonic vocabulary and larger formal structures than the music studied in TH 251, may vary each time the course is offered. May be taken as a level II theory elective. 
 
TH 623 Seminar in Music Theory         3 Credits      (Topic TBD; 3 credits; online)
The content of the course bearing this number will vary with the special interests and qualifications of the professor teaching it

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate music majors college-level music theory and musicianship that integrates both written and aural skills (sight singing, rhythm, keyboard harmony, and dictation) in a course that meets 3 times/week as a 60-minute lecture and once/week as a 90-minute lab.
  • Communicate and partner professionally with the Dpt. of Music Studies Faculty

Position Requirements

    • Master’s degree in music theory, composition, or related field
    • Demonstrated music theory teaching experience

 

 

Position Preferred Qualifications/Experience

    • PhD or DMA in Music Theory or Composition 
    • 2 years of demonstrated successful music theory teaching experience at the college level
