About the Department

Primary Function of Organizational Unit (DELTA)
DELTA’s role within the Office of the Provost is to advance the integration and support of learning technologies in NC State’s academic programs and courses, both on campus and at a distance. DELTA supports distance-based credit programs and courses for the university and provides enterprise academic technology and instructional support services for all modes of course delivery. Working with NC State instructors and partners, DELTA leads the way in designing, creating, implementing and supporting extraordinary digital learning experiences for our community of learners. DELTA applies expertise in technologies and pedagogies to create and nurture innovative, effective and impactful digital learning experiences for our community of instructors and learners with a collaborative, service-oriented and innovative mindset.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit (NCSCaLE)
NC State Continuing and Lifelong Education is a key strategic leader, catalyst and partner in the development and delivery of leading-edge, market-driven continuing and lifelong education programs and services that benefit individuals, organizations and communities throughout North Carolina and beyond. The division serves as a hub of activity offering continuing and lifelong learning opportunities in face-to-face, online and hybrid modalities, utilizing professional meeting facilities for small to large groups, and providing technical assistance as well as outreach and engagement to a variety of organizations, agencies and communities.

Both DELTA and NCSCaLE are part of the Office of Instructional Programs (OIP), which provides programmatic planning and implementation of both academic and non-credit instructional programs at NC State.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) for Marketing and Communications (MarComm) provides vision and strategic leadership and sets the direction for marketing and communications initiatives for Digital Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) and NC State Continuing and Lifelong Education (NCSCaLE). This involves overseeing the development, implementation, and support of communications, social media, branding, and marketing programs for both divisions. The AVP will also facilitate collaboration and alignment in the marketing and communications area across the two divisions.

The AVP collaborates with both division’s senior management teams and unit directors and leads the shared Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team to achieve strategic goals, enhance awareness and promote the services and programs of the respective divisions. The AVP works in concert with senior university leaders, University Communications, and other key stakeholders to formulate and implement a lifelong branding strategy for the university and to strategically consider and implement marketing for online programs. Specific responsibilities for this position include:

 Marketing and Communications
  • Establishes and continually refines the vision and strategy for creating brand awareness and marketing products and services for DELTA, NCSCaLE and individual online programs.
  • Establishes and leads the vision and strategy for marketing the NC State Online brand for both general awareness and for individual online programs to generate enrollments.
  • Provides high level direction and leadership for internal and external communication planning and implementation for both divisions.
  • Engages with external partners, including other organizational units at NC State and academic programs (both credit and non-credit.
  • Proactively facilitates market research to identify opportunities for the university, including but not limited to those related to new target audiences, employer needs or educational programming trends.
  • Develops and implements plans to assess the effectiveness of marketing initiatives using key performance indicators and outcomes measures.
  • Seeks innovative as well as existing strategies, technologies and resources to increase efficiency and effectiveness in marketing, communications and both internal and external partnerships.

Team Leadership Responsibilities 
  • Provides high-level strategic and organizational leadership as a member of both DELTA and NCSCaLE’s Senior Management Teams.
  • Manages the DELTA and NCSCaLE marketing and communication team, collaborating with leaders of other division teams to set the strategic vision, direction and priorities for marketing and communication needs for both divisions.
  • Oversees the day-to-day personnel operations of the Marketing and Communications department, including supervision and performance management of staff.
  • Provides overall leadership for the development and management of marketing and communications budgets for both divisions. 

Other Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of the Marketing and Partnership Program Manager, the supervision of strategic marketing and communications initiatives for DELTA and Entrepreneurship Initiative (EI) operations; reporting, research and analysis as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Outreach and Entrepreneurship. 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a relevant post-baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or more of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or more of relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of proven executive-level leadership with marketing, communications, and branding experience, identification and development of new educational target audiences and program development experience.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with marketing budget and team/staff management.
  • Knowledge of marketing automation tools, CRM systems, and emerging technologies.
  • Deep understanding of the complex student journey.
  • Understanding of the educational mission of higher education in today’s world.
  • Knowledge of relevant market research technologies with a minimum of five years of conducting market research to support new program development.
  • Five years’ experience in managing digital marketing and communications strategies, emerging technologies, and their applications in online and digital education.
  • Proven experience as a strategic leader with a keen ability to synchronize the dynamic worlds of digital marketing and social media, with the ability to lead the development and creation of content, manage vendor partnerships, and grow brand awareness in targeted channels.
  • High level of independence and self-directed initiative.
  • Proven experience identifying, developing, and implementing strategic educational partnerships.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing and communication initiatives through metrics and data.
  • A creative and innovative mindset to develop unique and effective marketing approaches.
  • Excellent leadership skills (active listener, collaborative, self-aware, respectful, compassionate, creative, problem solver, reliable, dependable). 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education senior marketing and communications management and leadership experience with a proven record of success in strategic planning and partnership development at the state, national and international levels.
  • Experience marketing to adults in the graduate, online or continuing education space.
  • A master’s degree or doctoral degree.
  • Experience in marketing, partnership development and communications in a higher education setting, including a marketing organization’s finance and business operations requirements in higher education.
  • Knowledge of public relations strategies and tactics.
  • Experience conducting marketing research to understand audience preferences, identify trends, and inform marketing strategies.
  • Experience in developing and executing multichannel marketing campaigns to reach diverse audiences.
