Job Description
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Dean of the School of Applied Technology and Hospitality Management, provide quality maintenance and care of the horticultural field site and its equipment and support the instructional staff by assisting with laboratory experiences.
 
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  1. Assist students in the technical aspects of lab procedures; prepare, set up, disassemble and maintain lab materials. 
  2. Operate a variety of lab instruments and equipment; maintain grounds maintenance equipment and apparatus in a clean, operating and orderly condition, performing minor repairs as necessary, including minor repairs on small engines. 
  3. Inventory supplies and equipment; receive stock and maintain supplies and equipment. 
  4. Prepare laboratories for student experiments as directed by faculty. 
  5. Encourage the use of safety practices; maintain safety and cleanliness of area of responsibility. 
  6. Maintain weed control; mix and apply insecticides, fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and sprays. 
  7. Maintain watering schedule; replace and repair sprinkler heads and install sprinkler/irrigation systems. 
  8. Prepare soil mixtures or pots for potting; prepare plant material for transplanting. 
  9. Assist in maintaining greenhouse, shade house, hydroponic house and nursery plots.
  10. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities:
MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF: 
    1. Horticultural course material and subject matter. 
    2. Greenhouse and shade house operation.
    3. Landscape construction.
    4. Health and safety regulations.
    5. Fundamentals, terminology, techniques, equipment and materials used in the instruction of horticulture.
    6. Plants, plant propagation, transplanting, growing and maintaining plants.
    7. Proper use of fertilizers, insecticides, soil preparation materials, weed control materials and other materials used in grounds maintenance.
    8. Irrigations systems, installation and maintenance.
    9. Procedures, safety, measurements and equipment applicable to horticulture.
    10. Technical aspects of field of specialty.

 

ABILITY TO:  
  1. Provide appropriate materials, equipment and supplies for the horticultural instructional program.
  2. Administer first aid.
  3. Recognize pests, diseases, weed species and various plants and shrubs. 
  4. Prune and trim plants and shrubs properly.
  5. Operate, repair and service a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  6. Understand and follow oral and written directions. 
  7. Work independently with little direction.
  8. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others. 
  9. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  10. Meet schedules and timelines.
  11. Plan and organize work.
Education & Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above 
AND
Two (2) years of technical training and experience in the area of assignment.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment, a valid Pesticides Applicator’s Certification. 
    • Must satisfactorily pass a pre-employment physical examination if selected for position.

Salary:
Range 24, Steps 1-7, $5,202.92-$6,582.76. Initial placement for external applicants is Step 1. An excellent benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental, retirement, vacation, generous sick leave package, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.

Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday: 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Approximately). Work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the school.
 
Successful candidate may be assigned to any of the campus sites (Chula Vista, National City, Otay Mesa, and/or San Ysidro).
Start Date: As soon as the successful candidate is identified and following the subsequent governing board approval.

Selection Procedure:
