Job Description

 

General Statement of Responsibilities

Instructors are primarily responsible for organizing and carrying out structured learning processes for students in their academic and programmatic unit. In addition, instructors participate in the full range of professional and college-related activities including student advising, curriculum development, professional growth, departmental and college-wide meetings, committee activity, and community involvement. Proficiency in written and oral English and Spanish is preferred for this position.

Supervision Received

The Dean is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the Vice President of Instruction. The Dean confers with the Department Chair in decisions regarding instructor workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.

 

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

 

  • Instructs students in a classroom, online learning platform, lab, learning center, or other setting as appropriate.
  • Partners directly with department faculty in the process of student learning, assessment and performance by providing feedback through debriefing sessions.
  • Participates in assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institutional levels.
  • Develops, communicates, and utilizes student assessment processes and instruments which are related to the stated objectives of the course, the department and the institution.
  • Participates in comprehensive program reviews, to include regular and systemic curriculum and program assessment to be used for continuous program and curricular improvement.
  • Advises students on matters of program goals and course requirements; schedules office hours.
  • Prepares, distributes, utilizes and updates instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
  • Participates as a team member in department meetings, recruitment events and development, and planning and advising Education Club.
  • Participates in curriculum planning and development as needed.
  • Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities as assigned.
  • Participates in the development of the class schedule.
  • Engages in regular professional growth activity based on the objectives established in an approved professional growth plan.
  • Represents the Early Childhood & Elementary Education Department and the College to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
  • Provides a positive role model for students, especially in the areas of caring, advocacy, respect for self and others, collegiality, ethical behavior, ethical reasoning, and strong work ethic (including responsibility, dependability, and accountability) and provides constructive feedback to students.
  • Responsible for departmental equipment and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials as appropriate to the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Screening Criteria

 

Education: A Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, or related field is required.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Experience: Three years of experience working in an early childhood and elementary education settings is required. Postsecondary experience, including teaching, advising, and curriculum development, is preferred.

Knowledge of: Contemporary knowledge of the following Early Childhood and/or Elementary education subjects: child development infancy through middle childhood , trauma-informed practice in educational settings, developmentally appropriate practice and play-based learning, guiding children in group settings, social-emotional development and building resilience, supporting children with specialized needs, equity/diversity/inclusion in education, and building partnerships with families. Curriculum development for adult learners and use of a variety of different pedagogical methods including interactive lecture, large and small group activity, multimedia usage, reflective practice, peer learning, discussion, and engaging web-based instruction; contemporary community college mission, its role in higher education, and its diverse student population; the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; computer applications for communication and learning, including word processing, the Internet, online instruction, social media, spreadsheets, and multi-media presentations.

Ability to: Speak and write in both Spanish and English preferred; communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and students; work collaboratively as a member of an academic department; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in the classroom including online instruction and hybrid learning; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth; demonstrate excitement and enthusiasm in teaching in the subject area; adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including lectures, group activities, individual instruction, distance learning, and hybrid learning; work and interact effectively with staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; participate in curriculum and program development; and participate in the student advising program and college-wide efforts to improve student retention and success. Pass a criminal background check.

Licenses: For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days ( ORS 807.020 (1).

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials less than 5 pounds weekly, and 5-25 pounds occasionally, and 25-60 pounds rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities. Manual dexterity and coordination are required for less than half of the daily work period (about 40%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. May also be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings or traveling between counties.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in an office environment. The employee is not exposed to hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate.
