Position Summary

Assistant Dean of Student Services

Salary Schedule Placement:
Commensurate with education and experience according to Salary Schedule C2.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

SCOPE:

The Assistant Dean of Student Services is responsible for the direct day-to-day operations of specific areas within the Student Services division; establishing and implementing departmental policies, protocols, and procedures; supporting staff as they respond to student challenges and concerns; responding to requests and problems from students, faculty, staff, and parents; and ensuring positive student, faculty, staff, and parent relations.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to adhering to the general guidelines as specified by the Faculty/Staff Handbook, the Dean of Students, the President, and Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees, responsibilities will include the following:
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of assigned areas, providing overall direction and leadership to staff assigned to student services functions, programs, operations, and activities.
  • Ensure that all departments, student activities, and policies comply with college, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist the Dean of Students with matters related to student conduct—including protocols, procedures, and necessary decision-making, when needed.
  • Assist the Dean of Students with strategic planning in long-term planning, strategic alignment, and management oversight of student affairs departments including, but not limited to, financial aid, admissions and enrollment management, student records, student success center, career services, and upward bound.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in response to crises, in concert with the Dean of Students, to support students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist the Dean of Students in developing policies, updating the Student Handbook.
  • Assist with student activities, graduation and event planning, and new student orientation.
  • Create and promote an environment that supports student growth and development.
  • Conduct Student Services staff performance reviews.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies affecting student success and division advancement.
  • Assist in preparing and administrating the division operating budget, as needed.
  • Provide leadership by maintaining ongoing collaboration with academic and technical programs to coordinate student support, intervention strategies, and student retention initiatives to address barriers to success.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude, philosophy, and commitment which promotes student growth and learning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student and President.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution,
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in higher education, student affairs preferred,
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience,
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude, philosophy, and commitment which promotes student growth and learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of an academic environment,
  • Knowledge of theories and best practices of student development,
  • Excellent command of the English language,
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality,
  • Knowledge of student conduct and discipline,
  • Direct experience working within an American system of higher education,
  • Ability and knowledge in maintaining a high degree of professionalism,
  • Ability to operate a personal computer including Microsoft Office programs,
  • An understanding of and a commitment to the philosophy and mission of the Alabama Community College System,
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and various situations in a professional manner.
