Job Summary


 

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring a Director of Student Services in the Career and Educational Planning department. The Director of Student Services - Career and Educational Planning provides leadership for academic advisement, career and transfer services, the Welcome Center, and testing and placement services.


 

Essential Functions


 

30% Leadership: Provides strategic leadership to multiple departments and full time/part time employees, including advising, career and transfer, the welcome center, and course placement/testing. Supports the strategic direction and mission of the College with a particular focus on student persistence and completion in an integrated support services model. Directs and manages services such as testing/placement, career and transfer information, selection of appropriate areas of study, course selection, class scheduling, goal setting, and the development of an academic plan that fulfills student goals (i.e., graduation and/ or completion). Ensures that effective academic advising is available and provided to students at all campus sites through a variety of mediums, including appointments, walk-ins, group advising, phone and email, online advising, and chat. Works with academic administrators to create, maintain, and deploy academic advising support structures across the programs and student types (i.e, traditional, non-traditional, developmental, online, etc.). Leads and serves on a variety of college and district committees focused on student retention and success.

25% Supervision: Manages human resources processes including recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of professional and support staff in advisement, career/transfer, the welcome center, and placement services/testing. Develops and conducts ongoing training for staff in areas of supervision to include advising, curriculum, transfer, placement, and other student success areas as assigned. Conducts performance evaluations and coordinates progressive discipline (if warranted) of staff in assigned areas of supervision.

20% Strategic Planning and Assessment: In collaboration with other enrollment services staff and advising, career and transfer, and placement staff, plan activities, strategies, and innovative programs which align to Guided Pathways and improve student success and completion to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Provides strategic leadership and direction for the implementation and use of academic advising technology that supports early alert and support resources for students. Develops student learning outcomes and develops tools to assess the accuracy and effectiveness of services within the area of supervision. Collects data on effectiveness; prepare annual assessment reports; share results of assessments, and develop improvement plans as appropriate.

15% Collaboration and Liaison: Fosters communication and collaboration, in a learning college model, with faculty and staff across the college and district to provide support and development of processes and procedures that support integrated student support services; develops, supports, and maintains effective relationships with community partners; represents college interests within the Maricopa Community Colleges District councils and committees; provides leadership, coordination, and oversight for strategic and operational planning in a shared governance model; engages and actively participates in college-wide assessment and accreditation processes, and integrates student-centered principles in decision making and actions. Serves as liaison and collaborates with academic, student services, and the District Office to ensure all responsible departments are providing current, accurate, and timely information to students.

10% Liaison: Responsible for leading and collaborating on various student persistence, retention and completion efforts and collaborating with faculty and staff from academic affairs and administrative services; acts as the liaison between District committees/councils and EMCC; other duties as assigned commensurate to the grade level of the position.

Minimum Qualifications


 

Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education, business administration, public administration or related field AND four (4) years of full-time equivalent related experience in higher education student support services that includes two (2) years of management experience in areas of oversight (Career and Transfer, Course Placement and / or Advising).

OR

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education, business administration, public administration, or related field and six (6) years of full-time equivalent related experience in higher education student support services that includes two (2) years of management experience in areas of oversight (Career and Transfer, course placement, and/or Advising).

Desired Qualifications

 
  • Three (3) years of professional experience providing academic advising in a college setting
  • Three (3) years of experience directly supervising teams of full time and part-time staff in multiple departments/functions simultaneously
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a cohort advising model in centralized and decentralized environments
  • Two (2) years of experience collaborating with faculty and other employees on complex, multifaceted student success initiatives or programs within area of supervision
  • Two (2) years of experience working with at-risk students in a post-secondary Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and/or Minority Serving Institution (MSI)
  • Two (2) years of experience working with an online enrollment system such as Peoplesoft Student Information System (SIS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Financial Management System (FMS), and /or Human Capital Management (HCM)

Special Working Conditions

 
  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate’s own expense
