Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Robert H. Smith School of Business consists of over 1000+ active employees including faculty, exempt, non-exempt staff, and student employees. Consult with various University Human Resources departments to include Payroll, Employment, Benefits, PHR and Academic Affairs. Under the direction of the Payroll Manager, the position will assist in the payroll process for the Robert H. Smith School of Business. The position will handle the administrative and transactional responsibilities for hourly students; prepare temporary contracts for faculty and support the Director of Human Resources and Payroll Manager with ad hoc responsibilities.

  • Perform day-to-day payroll functions for the college to include processing PHR appointments for academic and non-academic units. Calculate, initiate, and prepare all payroll adjustments (payroll charges, overloads, leave payouts, time entry adjustments, terminations, LWOP, sabbatical, J1-H1 Visas, promotion and tenure appointments, admin increments, summer pay/summer school, retention, contract agreements etc.) in PHR for faculty, exempt and non-exempt staff. Process, and onboard Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants and enter student PHR transactions. Assist employees and monitor all walk-in payroll requests. Process bi-weekly PHR actions relating to overloads and non-standard pays for academic Areas and Office of Executive Education, Online MBA, EMBA, Flex MBA Programs.
  • Process payroll entries for faculty, staff and students into the human resources system on a bi-weekly basis and conform with established policies and procedures.
  • Respond to routine inquiries from faculty, staff and students about on-boarding, payroll and human resources related matters.
  • Administer contracts for temporary faculty.
  • Assist in establishing and updating human resources files and databases.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience::
  • A Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of relevant payroll experience.
OR
  • An Associate’s Degree and 5-7 years of relevant payroll experience.
OR
  • A High School Diploma or GED and 7-9 years of relevant payroll experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Microsoft Excel experience required and working in spreadsheets and databases.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and must possess the ability to interact with a diverse public in a professional, sensitive, and service-oriented fashion.
  • Excellent team contributor; energetic self-starter, highly professional and positive demeanor; attention to detail is critical.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
  • Experience using payroll systems.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends for reports.
