To lead the Adult Education and Literacy Team, on the south-end (Dubuque County and surrounding area) of the NICC district, in the areas of High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) programs. The Lead will work to increase student enrollment, engagement, persistence, and completion of their programs through classroom teacher, one-on-one mentoring/coaching, and implementation of technology to meet the student’s needs through a hybrid format. In addition, the Lead will also complete the following Instructor/Coach duties: Using contemporary, researched-based curriculum to build students’ academic skills to prepare them for the HiSET and/or learn English as a Second Language. Help students navigate the systems, services, resources, and training available to successfully facilitate a pathway to a career or further education. Assists the student to troubleshoot barriers through education and training and works with the student to obtain employment or additional training.

Duties and Responsibilities

Be an expert in the area of High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) programs.
Ensure that High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) curriculum is in compliance with Iowa Department of Workforce Development (DWD) and work to develop additional programs and curriculum to meet the needs of our students, on the south-end of the NICC district.
Maintain an overall understanding of each HSED and ESOL student enrolled in Dubuque County and the surrounding area in terms of students’ Individual Learning Plan, placement scores, personalized curriculum, as well as writing daily update notes in the College database to track student progress.
Conduct daily outreach via phone call, email, and text to applicable HSED and ESOL students and record notes on outreach in the College database to track student progress.
Assist the Director of Adult Education and Literacy with HSED and ESOL orientation and enrollments.
Research best practices for student retainment and successful completion of High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL).
Collaborate with existing staff to promote and implement best instructional strategies to increase student engagement, persistence, and completion of High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) programs.
 

Implement technology to meet the demands of a hybrid learning environment for both staff and students.
Leads will also perform the following tasks of the AEL instructor/coach:
Provide classroom HSED and ESOL for adult learners in face- to-face (and remote learning delivery method when necessary.)

Assist students in completing orientation and registration processes.
Work to develop relationships with students through intake information, discussion of potential barriers to success, and educational and career planning.
Connect students to necessary educational resources, social services, workforce services, and other resources as appropriate. Work closely with faculty and other success coaches to identify students at high-risk for failure and intervene quickly by providing assistance. Facilitate a seamless transition for students moving into other NICC college programs and/or the workforce.

Provide group/classroom style programming and/or workshops to improve student retention and success such as: study strategies, learning styles, career (soft skills), job seeking, resume building, interview skills, interview preparation, financial literacy, computer literacy, etc in anticipation of a student’s successful completion of a program.
Assist as needed in recruitment and outreach initiatives in assigned area to raise community awareness of education/training opportunities available through NICC and community partners
Meet and communicate regularly with students to provide information and resources as they progress through their program of study.
Ability and willingness to travel across the northeast Iowa district as needed.
Communicate effectively with the Director of Adult Education and Literacy about successes, issues, and barriers as they relate to the position and students.
Know, understand and practice cultural sensitivity to immigrant, under-represented and under-resourced populations in the community and at NICC.

Attend training or conferences necessary to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Previous K-12 or post-secondary teaching experience preferred. Bilingual and/or Spanish proficiency is preferred. Experience working with a diverse student population is preferred. Ability and willingness to travel on a daily basis across the northeast Iowa district.
