Job Summary
Position Description: This is a tenure-eligible faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Science’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky, with a 12-month appointment in the Regular Title Series. The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center has an established national and international reputation in the fields of equine health related to infectious diseases and immunology.
The appointee will be administratively responsible to the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Science. The initial appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank, with an anticipated distribution of effort of 75% research, 15% service, and 10% teaching. The appointee is expected to focus on aspects of equine health that include, but are not limited to, immune and inflammatory responses, the responses to and detection of infectious diseases, and novel approaches to identifying infection.
Position Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the position is to develop a nationally recognized research program in equine health. The appointee is expected to garner extramural funding for her/his research program and to interact with industry stakeholders.
The mission of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center is to conduct research on diseases that affect the health and welfare of the horse, which are consistent with the needs of the local, national, and international horse industry. This position focuses on general equine health and inflammation, while across the Gluck Center there is additional expertise in equine infectious diseases, reproduction, the musculoskeletal system, parasitology, toxicology, genetics, and diagnostic testing.
This colleague will be expected to collaborate with other faculty in the department and elsewhere and to develop an extramurally funded independent research program related to equine health and inflammatory responses to infectious and non-infectious disease conditions. As a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University, the appointee will be expected to participate in the education and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars/fellows. This faculty member will also be expected to participate in teaching/advising of undergraduates as part of the teaching mission of the Department of Veterinary Science. Finally, this appointee will be expected to engage in service activities benefitting the Department, College, University, and external stakeholders, including serving as the Department’s liaison with the University’s IACUC and Office of the Attending Veterinarian.
Required qualifications: The successful candidate for the position shall have the following academic/professional qualifications:
a. PhD or equivalent research degree.
b. DVM (or equivalent), with the ability to be licensed as a veterinarian in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
c. Advanced academic training and/or research experience in the field of animal health and disease processes.
d. Demonstrated ability to attract and maintain extramural research funding.
e. Academically qualified for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor in the Regular Title Series.
f. Demonstrated ability to be involved in interdisciplinary and collaborative research and in the training of undergraduate and graduate students.
g. Demonstrated ability to interact with industry stakeholders.
Criteria for Promotion: Appointment to the position will be at the level of Assistant Professor. Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor will be based on the candidate’s performance in the position in the areas of (i) research, (ii) mentoring of graduate and postdoctoral students, (iii) undergraduate instruction, (iv) university and public/professional service, and (v) attainment of professional status and peer recognition. Assessment of the candidate’s level of performance in each of these areas will be made by peer evaluation as viewed from the unit’s statement on evidences. This evaluation will include internal faculty, and external referees both identified by the candidate and independent of the candidate.
Evaluation of a candidate’s performance relative to original and productive research related to equine health will be based upon (i) significance of the body of research published by the candidate in refereed journals, books, conference proceedings, reports, etc.; (ii) impact of the candidate’s research on advancing our understanding and/or resolution of a major scientific problem in her/his field of specialization; and (iii) success of the candidate in obtaining nationally competitive or other extramural funding in support of her/his research program.
Criteria for evaluating the candidate’s contribution to university and public/professional service may include (i) extent and effectiveness of service on departmental, college or university committees, panels, forums, boards, etc.; (ii) public service involving professional activities that emanate from the special competence of the individual in her/his area of expertise; (iii) participation and leadership in professional societies, specialty-organizations, review panels, scientific conferences, etc.; and (iv) review of journal manuscripts, grant applications, etc.
Specific criteria for evaluating performance in student and postdoctoral training activities include (i) mentoring of graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars; (ii) successful guidance of graduate students to their terminal degrees; (iii) serving on student advisory committees; and (iv) subsequent professional accomplishments of graduate students or postdoctoral scholars whose training was supervised by the candidate.
Specific criteria for evaluation of undergraduate instruction will include student and peer evaluation of lecture and laboratory teaching.
