Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Assistant Director (Communications and Marketing) for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS).
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • The Assistant Director is responsible for high-level analysis in performing various strategic, analytical, communications, and administrative tasks for the SAS Executive Dean’s Office and the school and will act with considerable autonomy and responsibility in accomplishing those tasks and managing related projects.
  • The position requires advanced skills in communications, marketing, research, writing, organization, project management, website content management, interpersonal communication, supervision, and high-level analytical and strategic thinking.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Journalism, or related field.
  • Seven years of experience in communications, journalism, public and media relations, and marketing.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Superior experience and skills in storytelling.
  • Experience with web design, data gathering and analysis, and quantitative analysis. Demonstrated experience in news and feature writing as well as web and social copy development, proofreading, and editing.
  • Experience in media relations, digital communications, publication production, and strategic communication planning.
  • Experience in using and knowledge of current social media platforms for strategic communications or brand and reputation development.
  • Excellent research, analysis, writing, interpersonal, collaborative, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and a high-level of project management to oversee multiple high priority projects simultaneously while meeting project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree preferred. Experience in or knowledge of higher education.
  • Eight years of experience in communications, journalism, public and media relations, and marketing.
  • Experience in project management platforms and knowledge of HTML and website software. Knowledge of SEO/SEM best practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally within the school and university.
Equipment Utilized
  • Various office equipment, MS Office, as well as communication and editorial equipment and software.
  • Experience with computer content management software.
  • Familiarity with still and video photography.
  • Knowledge and experience using project management programs and social media platforms.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Requires some evening and weekend work.
  • Own transportation for travel to all RU-NB and Rutgers campuses as well as travel throughout the state.
  • Occasional out of state travel.
