We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on building scalable numerical algorithms for scientific graphs and machine learning for high performance computers.  This position resides in the Discrete Algorithms group in the Mathematics in Computation Section, Computer Science and Mathematics Division, Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • This position necessitates collaboration within a diverse, multi-disciplinary research team. The team consists of mathematicians, computational and computer scientists, and domain scientists with theoretical and experimental expertise. The primary objective is to conduct comprehensive and applicable research that aligns with the mission of the Laboratory.
  • The incumbent will participate in developing and analyzing scalable numerical algorithms. These algorithms, designed for scientific graph problems and machine learning applications, are often tailored to address large-scale and complex scientific applications.
  • The role involves delivering and supporting these numerical algorithms in high-performance software libraries to facilitate advancements in various scientific disciplines.
  • Research findings are to be disseminated through peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and presentations at professional seminars and conferences.
  • The position requires active engagement in professional organizations. This involves membership, contributing to discussions, assuming leadership roles, and progressing the discipline.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Build scalable sparse numerical algorithms for scientific graphs and machine learning models targeting high performance computers
  • Experience on machine learning libraries and packages in Python/C/C++ preferably on HPC platform.
  • Multimodal AI models using graphs, sequences, and images.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
