Position Summary

The Assistant Managing Editor is completely responsible for the editing and partly responsible for the production of approximately 60 new titles (in two seasonal lists) per calendar year, including the acquisition and delivery of components for e-versions of most titles.

 

Essential Functions         

  • Manages (and currently trains, as needed) a Project Editor who manages his own list of about 10 books.
  • Reviews manuscripts for substantive, stylistic, and possible production problems and adherence to The Chicago Manual of Style and advises authors regarding required alterations and revisions of manuscripts, page proofs, and indexes and provides due dates for these items
  • Prepares manuscripts first for “pre-editing” (in which the files are cleaned up and styled by the selected compositor) and then for copyediting; analyzes manuscripts to ensure conformity to technical requirements and establishes the required level of editing and instructs freelance copyeditors regarding specific stylistic and substantive issues; actively participates in weekly meetings with Editorial, Marketing, and Production to discuss recently transmitted books and their components and special needs, if any.
  • Interviews, tests, hires, and manages freelance copyeditors and proofreaders as well as assigns projects, maintains quality control, assesses performance, and manages the budget and verifies invoices for each freelancer.
  • Coordinates and oversees the flow of manuscripts, page proofs, and indexes through the editorial and production processes.
  • Establishes Press guidelines for editorial style and procedures, regularly researching and implementing updates to accommodate changes in scholarly standards and/or technology.
  • Edits all advertising copy, cover/jacket copy, catalog copy, and other promotional materials.
  • Follows and updates master schedule on BiblioLIVE database to make the information accessible to all staff and facilitate marketing planning..
  • Oversees corrections by the author and proofreader during page-proofs stage and serves as the primary conduit of information between authors, freelancers, and Press staff as manuscripts move from final editorial acceptance to published book.
  • Plans and manages department finances/budget providing data to assist in the preparation of provisional book budgets; applies for CIP data from the Library of Congress for each FUP book and maintains the integrity of the copyright page by including the CIP data, along with all the other required elements..
  • Participates in weekly production/scheduling meetings to report to colleagues on the status of the various books
  • After QC’ing ePubs, uploads them to the digital rights partner/repository for storage and/or distribution.
  • Works closely with the marketing department to ensure the timely delivery and editorial integrity of cover and catalog copy; works closely with the Production and Design Manager on the areas of responsibility in which their roles overlap.

           

Required Qualifications   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in humanities or social sciences; or in lieu of the degree a minimum of four years of related experience
  • Expertise in copyediting books and project management
  • Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and familiarity with other style manuals
  • A Facility in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent organization, strong verbal and written communication skills, and flexibility

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience with scholarly books

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $63,100

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $78,940

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
