About the Department

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties

This position will develop, test and implement software for hardware components integration applied to precision agriculture research activities. The successful candidate will design custom software to integrate computer vision and IoT components which will be used for data collection and crop monitoring in agricultural fields. More broadly, the candidate will support the Precision Sustainable Agriculture network in general by improving existing technology and supporting adjacent projects as necessary. The IT Analyst/Programmer will work with researchers and staff associated with the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and USDA’s grant-funded projects to assist in the integration of hardware components into systems applied to precision agriculture. Furthermore, the incumbent will test and document progress, train and manage undergraduate students and create and maintain online resources for external users once the products are released and the documentation becomes public.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Highly independent and pro-active.
  • Python and C++ programming experience.
  • Basic understanding of computer vision principles, with main focus on stereo vision and OpenCV, and Pandas.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of experience in software development for hardware integration.
  • Some management and research experience.
  • Experience with documentation tools such as GitHub and Confluence..

  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
