Position Highlights

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral positions in observational and theoretical black hole astrophysics at the Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory, the University of Arizona. The Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory is a vibrant hub of technological innovations in both observational and theoretical astrophysics. With over 80 faculty members, new instruments, data processing methods, theoretical models, and numerical algorithms are constantly being developed. The successful applicants will be able to conduct independent research and to collaborate with Profs. Dan Marrone, Remo Tilanus, and Chi-kwan Chan, and Dr. Amy Lowitz, among others, on some of our upcoming projects:

  • Instrumentation development for the Event Horizon Telescope, a global array of millimeter-wavelength radio observatories studying event-horizon-scale physics through the technique of VLBI.
  • Analysis and interpretation of Event Horizon Telescope data, particularly for the key targets: the Sgr A* black hole in the Milky Way galaxy and the M87* black hole.
  • Designing and implementing space-borne VLBI stations to extend the reach of horizon-scale VLBI.
  • Developing new theoretical and numerical models of supermassive black holes using GPU and FPGA accelerated GRMHD and GRRT codes.
  • Architecting and deploying cutting-edge cyber-infrastructure to enable computation- and data intensive astrophysics.

The successful applicants will also have access to the observational and computational facilities of the Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory, including the 10-meter Submillimeter Telescope on Mt. Graham, the 12-meter ALMA Prototype Antenna on Kitt Peak, the 2×8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT, the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, and over 2,000,000 core-hours per year on the Puma and Ocelote Supercomputers from the University of Arizona. These are two-year positions with possible extension.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
