Schedule:  Various in-person days and times. Asynchronous online. 

$1,280 per credit hour of instruction. 


Under minimal supervision, Kirkwood Community College is seeking an instructor to teach asynchronous online and in-person Fundamentals of Oral Communication courses this Spring from 1/17/2023 - 5/9/2023.The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures. There is a possibility for the instructor to teach additional courses in subsequent semesters.

Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize and teach Fundamentals of Oral Communication in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
  • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught.  File a current copy of the syllabus at the beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
  • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, counselor, Financial Aid, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.



  • Be able and willing to represent the college in the most positive manner with prospective, former, and current students, clients, suppliers, and the community we serve.
  • Welcome, value, and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as promote an environment that embraces differences, supports inclusion and mitigates equity gaps.
  • Possess the ability to organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Prepare for, attend, and facilitate all classes and finals as scheduled.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and the general public.
  • Communicate in advance to staff, dean, and associate dean when class is canceled, moved to another location (such as the library) or taught by someone other than you.
  • Send or submit your course syllabi to the office staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff questions about scheduling matters.
  • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
  • Attend your Kirkwood email each weekday.

Position involves working in a classroom setting. Occasional (10-33%) sitting, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.    Constant (67-100%) standing, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing. 




  • A conferred Master’s degree by the date of appointment from an accredited institution in communication or a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the communication discipline.



  • Familiarity and experience with teaching college communication and public speaking at all levels
  • Experience teaching both written and oral workplace communications.
  • Familiarity or experience with teaching at a community college.
  • Coursework in college pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated experience working with English Language Learners.
  • Experience with online course development and delivery. 
  • Demonstrated successful application of active and collaborative teaching strategies.
