The Department The Discipline-based Education Research Community at NDSU is highly interdisciplinary and includes nine faculty members with appointments across STEM fields (biology, chemistry, microbiology, physics, and psychology). Our community also supports two postdoctoral research associates and over 15 PhD students. We offer a dual PhD program in DBER and a STEM discipline. See https://www.ndsu.edu/dber/

The Community Fargo combines the safety and friendliness of a small town with the cultural offerings of a large city. With a metro-area population of nearly 200,000, Fargo-Moorhead is the largest community between Minneapolis and Seattle. The city consistently appears on national lists of best places to live and is noted for its safety, health care, recreation, job opportunities, and economic development. The community offers museums, movie theaters, shopping, concerts, and sporting events at many venues. Bus service around campus and in the community is free for NDSU students. An international airport and a commercial bus line serve Fargo-Moorhead. Residents enjoy North Dakota’s four seasons, which allow for a wide variety of outdoor activities, from ice fishing and cross-country skiing in the winter to golfing, boating, and outdoor live music events in the summer. Fargo-Moorhead has 175 public parks covering more than 3,000 acres. The parks offer nearly 100 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and running, plus facilities for baseball, softball, swimming, tennis, and hockey.


Position Description The Department of Biological Sciences and DBER community at North Dakota State University have a 12-month, postdoctoral fellowship, beginning as soon as possible following hiring approval. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Lisa Montplaisir and the DBER Community to research learning at the undergraduate level. The appointment is effective July 1, 2024, Fringe benefits will be as provided by law and policy. This appointment does not earn credit toward tenure.The initial appointment is for one year with the expectation that this will be renewed for one additional year, contingent on satisfactory progress under the direction of Dr Lisa Montplaisir and continued funding through the NSF PERT project.

 


The responsibilities of this position may also include, but not be limited to, the following: Contribute to the PERT program and broader CiDER community; Work collaboratively with the CiDER and NDSU communities; Conduct independent research in teacher professional developent including development of ideas, project design, data collection and analysis, research dissemination; Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals. Attend and present research results at professional conferences such as the Noyce annual summit; Assist in the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students; Teach one undergraduate course as instructor of record in a mentored teaching experience (course to be determined by departmental needs and your expertise); Participate in the day-to-day activities typical of a research university, Ph.D.-granting department (graduate/departmental seminars, graduate and undergraduate student recruiting, various ad hoc committees, etc.); Engage in service to the profession as invited (e.g., reviewing manuscripts for journals, reviewing grant proposals for funding agencies, involvement in professional society activities, etc.); and contribute to a positive work environment through cooperation and collaboration with others by developing and maintaining good working relationships with faculty, staff, employees, and students.

 


This position is subject to the rules and policies of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education and NDSU. (Copies of most of these rules are in the NDSU Policy Manual, which is available at http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/policy/.) These policies provide that your performance is subject to review on an annual basis, and continuation of your appointment is contingent upon satisfactory progress and requirements of NDSU.

 


Minimum Candidates must 1) demonstrate an interest in research on teaching and learning at the undergraduate level; 2) demonstrate knowledge and background in a STEM field; 3) have completed a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in STEM (as defined by NSF) or closely related field (or will have completed by July 2024 but no earlier than July 2022); 4) demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, presentations at conferences); 5) be US citizens, national, or permanent residents; 6) not hold a tenure-track position.

 
Preferred Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: 1) teaching at the undergraduate level; 2) mentoring students; 3) interacting and collaborating effectively with a diversity of colleagues and students.
