Position Responsibilities


Position Summary
As part of the University of Idaho’s focus on sustainability, and the College of Science 2022 cluster hire focused on the response of biological communities to global change, Chemistry is seeking a collaborative faculty to join the College research infrastructure at the most pressing problems facing humanity over the next decades.
This Chemistry hire will be at the tenure track assistant professor level. We seek highly collaborative and interdisciplinary scientists to establish strong extramurally funded research programs that build on existing strengths and collaborations within the college and university. We are looking for an outstanding and motivated individual with expertise in the field of Green Chemistry. The position may be suitable for a chemist with interests in the environmental field, either from an analytical or physical perspective, or an organic/inorganic chemist with interests in the development of sustainable methods and materials, or with expertise in the biomedical field.
  • Instructional duties encompass teaching 9 credits per year in Chemistry according to the needs of the department and as directed by the department chair. Advising undergraduate students is also part of the instructional responsibilities.
  • Scholarship duties encompass the conducting of research in the faculty member’s field of study and the communication of the results through publications in refereed professional journals. It is expected that he/she will make bona fide efforts to raise funds for this research, primarily by writing proposals to funding agencies. The involvement of students is considered part of the research effort.
  • Service duties include serving on institutional committees and participating in recruitment and retention events.
  • Outreach duties encompass participation in activities related to community involvement, as well as serving on professional committees and reviewing manuscript and proposals. It may also involve conducting workshops.
Unit/Department Summary
The Chemistry Department at the University of Idaho offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Undergraduate majors can choose between General, Professional, Pre-Med, and Forensic B.S. degree options. Of these, the Professional B.S. degree is certified by the American Chemical Society.
Ph.D. and M.S. students can conduct research in Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. Projects with an emphasis on biological and environmental studies are especially popular. A non-thesis option is also available for the M.S. degree.
The Department has an excellent suite of instrumentation and ample laboratory space. Our faculty is of the highest caliber, both as teachers and as researchers. We are eager to enroll new students and to prepare them for a rewarding career in Chemistry!

Qualifications


Minimum Education/Degree Required Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry.
  • Experience in a field of chemistry that is compatible with the descriptor Green Chemistry in any of the traditional fields of chemical specialization, including the development of sustainable methods/materials.
  • A strong commitment to research and teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • A strong commitment and potential for collaboration with other UI College of Science faculty and/or National Laboratories.
