The Africana Research Center  in the College of the Liberal Arts  is seeking an Administrative Support Assistant 3

The mission of the Africana Research Center is to encourage and support research and scholarship on Africa and its Diaspora that will enhance the lives of persons of African descent in the United States and throughout the Diaspora and serve as a catalyst for promoting an empowering environment where cultural production and discourse on diversity can be nurtured to advance the research, teaching, and outreach missions of Penn State. Our signature programming includes the Nelson Mandela Lecture, the Barbara Jordon lecture, and the ARC Professional Development Power Hour series. Our fellowship and grant programs include the postdoctoral fellowship program, Center and Institute Fellows Program, and Research Grants.

Working closely with the Center's Director and Managing Director, the Administrative Support Assistant 3 will assist with the overall day-to-day operations of the Center. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating all Center events, such as conferences, talks, and workshops

  • Preparing/processing various financial requests for travel, reimbursements, group meals, honorarium payments and reconciliation of purchasing card charges

  • Assisting with the processing of Human Resource matters and forms

  • Monitor and maintaining the Center’s budget and calendar

  • Composing, editing, proofing correspondence, newsletters, and event flyers

  • Making travel arrangements for the Center’s Director, Managing Director, and Postdocs

  • Maintaining spreadsheets, website, and social media accounts 

  • Maintaining conference room schedule 

  • Creating/maintaining the Center’s files, reports, and databases

The Administrative Support Assistant 3 will frequently use the following software and applications: Microsoft Office Suite, SAP Concur, as well as SIMBA (Penn State’s system for Integrated Management, Budgeting, and Accounting).

Education and Experience: This position typically requires a High School diploma or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other qualifications include:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Detailed- and customer service-oriented

  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgement while managing confidential materials

  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to manage and prioritize tasks 

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.
