Job Description
The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, we have diversified efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining the original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field.
Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for a Postdoctoral Fellow. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment
Job Functions:
- The applicant is expected to join and develop various ambitious projects whose goal is to advance intelligent robotic systems capable of accomplishing, and exceeding, human-level intelligence tasks and providing human-robot assistance. In addition, the applicant will be expected to have a set of independent exploratory projects whose purpose is to seek other avenues of advancing algorithmic foundations in robotics
- Grant writing, developing project ideas both independently and within a group, and be expected to lead graduate students and research staff towards completion of project goals in the form of academic writing to top-tier conferences and journals.
- Primary project will center on applications involving remote use of robots in space. The applicant will develop dynamic models, controllers and estimators (eg Kalman filters) for manipulators free-floating in space. These models, controller and estimators will then be implemented in Matlab
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD degree in any general Engineering (electrical, computer, systems, mechanical, mechatronics), Computer Science
Required Skillsets
- Robotic vehicle/architecture experience; programming in Python and matlab;
- Strong understanding of common mechanical engineering practices and standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Hand-on experience on mechatronic system design and development
Nice-to-have Skillsets
- Strong understanding of sensor, actuator, and control system.
- Experience with design for manufacturability.
- Proficient in mechanical and/or electrical CAD
