The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. (Diversity language is required in all job postings)

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.  CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments and their communities both in New York state and around the world.

Position Function

This position requires an experienced scientist in the broad area of lipid physiology with a focus on cholesterol/fatty acid metabolism and steroids – in both in vitro and in vivo systems. The individual would be required to investigate molecular function involving lipids, proteins that regulate lipids, and genetic elements that may regulate these proteins, using cells (signaling responses, lipid transport systems, and specific involvement of different organelles), and animal models (functional studies using gene-modified mice). Individuals should have the expertise in the area of cholesterol/fatty acid metabolism and steroids with the ability to develop new ideas and creatively design methods for driving the project forward.

Anticipated Division of Time

Research – 90%

  • Targeting genes for loss of function studies associated with lipid metabolism in cell lines.  Perform trials using metabolism models using laboratory transgenic and knockout mice.
  • Method development for dissecting and performing omics-based discovery research.
  • Systems biology analyses and prediction of novel functions and testing their regulation in relevant models.

Training/supervision of graduate and undergraduate students – 10%

This is a full-time (100% FTE) position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a three-year appointment with possible extension depending on available work, funding and performance.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in life sciences with strong background in cell and molecular biology, with good understanding of in vivo physiology.
  • Experience in cell culture, gene editing, functional assays (including gene expression, lipids and steroid analysis, transcriptional regulation, protein expression).
  • Effective use of omics-based approaches in discovery research that includes the use of bioinformatics tools and data analysis and graphing tools.
  • Proven ability to work independently, learn quickly and keep up with the rapid pace of biomedical research advances and methods.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Compile and analyze research data, and document project results in manuscript form for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
