South Dakota State University (SDSU) Research Computing within Information Technology is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Research Compute and Data Application Specialist (Research Facilitator). We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join our fantastic team.
As a part of our team, you will play a crucial role in assisting the research community. You will offer the user community advice and provide development support associated with applications, programs, and programming languages to help solve research problems that depend on high-performance computing services.
The Research Computing team removes obstacles to research achievement by offering computational skills to support researchers across all disciplines in their work. This position will be integral to this group of professionals sharing and utilizing cross-disciplinary computational techniques in new and developing fields. The Research Compute and Data Application Specialist will collaborate closely with faculty, students, postdoctoral researchers, and IT colleagues to facilitate and expedite research application-related solutions to solve research problems.
This position is 12-month, 100% time, benefit-eligible. This position is supervised by Assistant Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will support the university research community with efforts that include the planning, design, and coordination of research computing and data application software programs and data flow for university and South Dakota Board Of Regents (SDBOR) education and research communities. This will involve training in multiple research computing application areas associated with research software and data flow applications, and data flow design associated with scientific pipeline functions, as the responsibilities of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree in any discipline a closely related field completed by first day of employment.
  • At least three years of experience in research computing or closely related area.

Required Experience
  • High-Performance Computing application experience applied to at least one discipline.
  • Linux system administration knowledge using command-line utilities.
  • Knowledge of and configuring an application within a cluster system software stack or within a single server environment.
  • Experience and understanding of programming concepts, such as the use of Python programming within a parallel compute and single server serial (non-parallel) computing environment.
  • Experience creating high-performance computing batch scripts for computing jobs and with batch job submission.
  • Knowledge of research data transfer applications such as Globus, SFTP, or similar.
  • Experience training users how to use HPC applications and programs.
  • Knowledge of Cloud Computing service offerings.
  • Experience contributing to team projects.
  • Research computing/related outreach experience.
  • Positive customer service skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Ph.D., DSc, or EdD is preferred in any discipline.
  • Research Computing Expertise in at least two scientific disciplines.
  • Experience with Slurm cluster resource manager.
  • Parallel File storage system experience.
  • Experience assisting with writing grant proposals or publications.
