Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Position Description

The postdoctoral research associate position in the Oxide Molecular Beam Epitaxy Group is primarily engaged in the synthesis of thin films of cuprate superconductors and other complex oxides by means of molecular beam epitaxy, and their characterization by a suite of experimental techniques.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Running, maintaining, and upgrading an advanced oxide molecular beam epitaxy system.
  • Design, construction, and commissioning of the additional system components and infrastructure.
  • Synthesis and characterization of thin films of cuprate superconductors and other complex oxides by XRD, AFM, transport, and magnetic measurements.
  • Collecting and analyzing the data, formulating the conclusions, and communicating the results in research publications and presentations such as seminars, colloquia, and conference talks.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in Condensed Matter Physics or related field
  • Demonstrated record of publications in leading research journals
  • Experience in designing, building, maintaining and operating oxide molecular beam epitaxy systems.
  • Experience with atomic-beam rate measurements, surface-science tools such as RHEED, and sophisticated laboratory electronics.
  • Experience in MBE synthesis and characterization of thin films, including cryogenic transport measurements, mutual inductance measurements, X-ray diffraction and Atomic force microscopy.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in MBE synthesis and characterization of thin films of cuprate superconductors
