Summary of Position

The Department of Safety and Occupational Health Applied Sciences (SOHAS) at Keene State College invites applications for a clinical faculty position in the SOHAS Program beginning January 2023. The College’s SOHAS program offers a B.S. in SOHAS and Construction Safety Sciences and a fully on-line M.S. in SOHAS. Each SOHAS degree program is recognized as a Quality Academic Program by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (https://www.bcsp.org/gsp/qaps) and students can apply for the Graduate Safety Professional (GSP) designation at the end of their respective program.

The SOHAS program (https://www.keene.edu/academics/programs/safe/) is one of the largest majors at the College with more than 300 students currently enrolled at the BS and MS levels. Students and faculty are engaged in the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Student and Granite State Chapters. The faculty also have liaisons with state (NH, MA, CT) Career and Technical Education Centers, providing training and outreach for potential students. The SOHAS Department has an active relationship with the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and more than 100 companies, and sponsors two job fairs a year with more than 45 companies at each fair. Many students obtain paid internships and full-time jobs at the fairs.

The College is in the City of Keene (https://keenenh.gov/), a small, vibrant New England town in the southwestern corner of the state. The town boasts a first-rate theater venue, eclectic restaurants and shopping, and numerous outdoor activities. The College is located just an hour away from some major ski resorts in New Hampshire and Vermont, less than 2 hours to NH beaches, and two hours from Boston.

All candidates must hold a master’s degree in occupational safety and health or related field; current or able to obtain CSP or CIH within 3 years; and demonstrated high school, college, or industrial setting level teaching effectiveness in class, online, and/or lab including planning preparation, teaching, assessment, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will deliver effective and engaging courses to support student understanding, application, assessment, and improvement of safety, occupational health and environmental health management components and systems. All candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in teaching modalities including classroom, laboratory, and on-line for undergraduate courses. This appointment will serve the College’s Safety and Occupational Health majors with primary teaching responsibilities integrating the following areas: manufacturing, construction, risk management, general industries, and worker training. Additional responsibilities will include student advisement, curriculum development, laboratory management, and department and College service. Faculty provide service to the College through sponsorship of and participation in committees, clubs, and activities. Scholarly activity is required for tenure-track. Teaching load typically includes four 4-credit undergraduate courses for clinical faculty per academic semester with additional teaching opportunities during the summer session. Faculty may also have an opportunity to teach courses in the College’s Integrative Studies Program (http://www.keene.edu/isp/) depending on SOHAS course loads.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field; and must have a CSP or CIH or complete within 3 years of start date. Candidates must also have 5 years plus of professional applied experience at the managerial level or above (external to the classroom or laboratory) that demonstrates successful application of occupational safety and health principles. Preference will be given to candidates with one or more years of high school, college level, or workplace teaching in a classroom setting, online and/or lab, including course planning, preparation, instruction, classroom management, teaching, assessment, and continuous improvement.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Board certification such as CE, CPE, CHMM, CIE, PE, and ARM. Additionally, the College has identified desirable qualifications that support our commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse campus community including the ability to speak a second language or to bring a multicultural perspective to the campus.

Salary Information

A candidate with a Master’s degree and limited teaching experience will be hired at the Clinical Instructor level. The rank minimum for a Clinical Instructor is $59,150. A candidate with a Master’s degree and a consistent record of successful teaching and of certification appropriate to the discipline will be hired at the Assistant Clinical Professor level. The rank minimum for an Assistant Clinical Professor is $63,160. Salary is complemented by a comprehensive benefits package and is based on the prevailing Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement. Salary information above reflects Academic Year 2022-2023 rank minimums.
