Laboratory Specialist Intermediate

University of Virginia

Job Description

Laboratory Specialist Intermediate

The Systems Genetics laboratory of Dr. Mete Civelek (?www.civeleklab.org ?) located at the Center for Public Health Genomics and Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The research associate works on dissecting pathways which lead to increased susceptibility to cardio-metabolic disorders. We use genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics to understand how genomic loci associated with cardiometabolic traits function at the molecular level and as part of a network of other genes to regulate vascular wall cells. The work is done using data from human cells and tissues. Current lab members are trained in various disciplines; therefore, we are primarily looking for enthusiastic team members with strong interest in human genetics and cardiometabolic disorders, and not specific skill sets. We provide a rich scientific and professional training environment for Postdoctoral Research Associates. This position and work is funded by a recent R01 grant from the NHLBI and a Leducq Foundation International Network of Excellence Award to study sex-specific mechanisms of atherosclerosis.

What we offer:

  • Training in human and mouse genetics, systems, and computational biology through interactions with lab members and workshops/courses offered on campus.

  • A stimulating environment with freedom to develop new research directions.

  • Regular opportunities to interact with other scientists at the University of Virginia at the Cardiovascular Research Center, Center for Public Health Genomics, and Department of Biomedical Engineering meetings.

  • Opportunity to be supported by the Cardiovascular Training Grant, who was recently renewed for its 50th year.

  • Supportive mentorship for multi-faceted career development and opportunities tailored towards individual career goals.

  • A research team consisting of a diverse group of trainees at the postdoctoral, doctoral, and undergraduate level.

  • University-wide resources for individuals with families and individuals underrepresented in science and engineering (https://graddiversity.virginia.edu/)

  • A department located in Charlottesville, situated at the foothills of Blue Ridge Mountains, with easy access to Shenandoah National Park, Richmond, and Washington D.C. with excellent cost of living.

Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in life sciences or a related field by the start date of the position.

  • Enthusiastic and ambitious individual with a strong interest in our research and laboratory environment.

  • Willingness to learn new computational approaches and design projects independently.

  • Eagerness to apply for postdoctoral grants and to take advantage of other career development opportunities.

  • Interest in working with junior lab members and undergraduates.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Salary: National Research Service Awards (NRSA) stipend levels will be used to determine the salary based on Postdoctoral Research Associate’s experience level.

The Selected candidate will be required to complete a background check and health assessment per University Policy.
