Location: Remote

Hiring Range: This position is anticipated to pay between $75,000 to $85,000 annually, depending on experience.

The Senior Strategist of Advocacy Communications (SSAC) will play a key role in establishing and progressing Best Friends as an authority in animal welfare, and drive decision-maker and public opinion on key issues critical to Best Friends’ 2025 campaign. This role is responsible for amplifying our CEO’s voice and visibility to influencers and decision makers, particularly in government and business, and to media that cover these areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Inform strategy, key message development, and tactical plans for Best Friends’ thought leadership platform specific to advocacy, business and tech that increases influencer visibility in these areas and engagement around Best Friends work and critical issues.
  • Develop, manage, and implement plans for increasing CEO visibility, around legislative initiatives, via media outreach, events and speaking opportunities; work with Communications Strategist in Utah + Public Relations Team to coordinate efforts and opportunities.
  • Inform and contribute content that elevates advocacy and legislative priorities via social media channels, Op-Ed’s, etc.
  • Coordinate with other members of the advocacy team in creating rapid-response materials and backgrounders; circulate key messaging, narratives and tool kits customized to legislators and media outlets.
  • Initiate research and testing to identify key influencers and audiences, and the messaging that resonates with them around priority advocacy and programmatic issues.
  • In coordination with digital advocacy work to promote and inform legislative actions and initiatives while increasing Julie’s visibility through social media channels.
  • Write press releases and conduct media outreach on legislative initiatives as requested by advocacy leadership or campaign leads.
  • Assist with preparation and attending conferences and events to promote advocacy efforts as requested.
  • Assist with outreach to legislative offices on federal legislation as requested.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science or related field required.
  • Political or legislative campaign communications, advocacy communications or public relations experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience writing op-eds, new stories, or ghost writing preferred.
  • Experience writing social media content.
  • Excellent computer skills with experience in MS office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
