Location: Brooklyn

Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer

Direct Reports: Development Manager, Marketing and Communications Manager & External Affairs Associate

Indirect Reports: N/A

Position Summary: The Director of External Affairs will report to the CEO and is charged with building the development/fundraising initiatives of START as well as oversee the implementation of a philanthropic environment. Promote the professional interdisciplinary collaboration and encourage/support teamwork to improve the marketing, branding and development activities of the agency’s Mission, Vision and Values. Leverage the work of START to build a fundraising infrastructure, cultivate relationships and donors, develop, and execute fundraising events, and improve the agency’s efforts in private and public foundations and corporations.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and implements fundraising and marketing and branding measured by development and marketing analytics that comprise the targets and key performance targets of the External Affairs performance dashboard.
  • Develops and implements organizational fundraising plan in collaboration with the CEO to raise revenue more than 25% of the costs this functional unit within 12 months, 75% within 24 months and over 100% within 30 months.
  • Cultivates relationships with patients, with staff, with agencies, foundations, corporations, and government entities.
  • Assures timely publication of the company newsletter called the Lantern to include relevant content and staff participation.
  • Coordinate audio-visual production in concert with Information Technology leadership.
  • Increases grant development, proposal output, and solicitation of prospects.
  • Identifies new revenue sources via public and private grants, major gifts, sponsorships and collaborations.
  • Coaches and mentors development and marketing staff toward unified and collaborative practices and mindset.
  • Collaborates with other functional units in agency messaging, website development, etc…
  • Functions as organizational spokesperson with philanthropic efforts, press releases and event management.
  • Serves as liaison between funding agencies for deliverables, meeting state regulations and compliance mandates.
  • Collaborates with CEO to develop organizational giving and fundraising environment.
  • Leads the development of new revenue sources through public and private grants, major gifts, sponsorships and local sources.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7-10 years of progressive development experience within a mid-size non-profit organization that caters to the underserved adult and adolescent population.
  • 5- Plus years in a managerial role.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Masters preferred.
  • Proven track record with major gifts, foundations & corporations, grant writing & RFP.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of implementing a fundraising plan and execution of such plan.
  • Experience with special events/galas and increasing net profits.
  • Experience in fundraising with success using industry standard metrics (cost per dollar raised, donor cultivation, foundation grants, etc.) and/or marketing/communication metrics (website and social media analytics).
  • Strong verbal & written communications skills.
  • Flexible, collaborative, coaching management style.
  • Knowledge of donors, foundations and low hanging fruit within social/human services sector.
  • High level of work ethic and sophistication to solicit and develop a Board of Directors.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
