Under the direction of the Senior Student Success Advisor, Student Success Advisors (SSA) provide reliable and proactive support, guidance, and referrals to assigned advisees. SSAs collaborate alongside college faculty and staff, external agencies, and consultants. Students will receive proactive advising, academic planning, and personal growth as a result. SSAs will empower students including those students who are considered at-risk with meaningful, intentional encounters to foster student-centered learning and success. Advisors will conduct case management of students and adhere to all applicable laws, policies, and regulations.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Foster a student-centered success environment through advising.
  2. Structure collaborative relationships with assigned advisees.
  3. Provide students with skills and strategies in becoming self-regulated learners.
  4. Support students in understanding and using effective learning strategies.
  5. Assist students in identifying and overcoming obstacles that impede academic success.
  6. Help students focus on individual goals and identify steps in reaching those goals.
  7. Support students to develop time management and organizational skills.
  8. Work closely with faculty, administrative, and other student services staff to provide: accurate academic advising information, advocate for and support student success, and outstanding service to students.
  9. Empower students through the advising relationship process:
    • To acquire knowledge of available campus resources;
    • Develop student personal growth and self-fulfillment;
    • Cultivate decision-making skills as they plan and make informed decisions regarding educational and career goals.
  10. Apply the proactive advising model and best practices to effectively problem-solve advising issues.
  11. Understand and comply with the college catalog, policies, and procedures.
  12. Foster student retention through various activities and events.
  13. Monitor student progress to degree completion and offer intervention services for at-risk students.
  14. Plan, implement and assess the delivery of success and retention activities and programming.
  15. Maintain case management of advisees.
  16. Design and deliver presentations to various audiences.
  17. Develop and maintain close, collaborative working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and administration.
  18. Consult with Idaho and out-of-state higher education institutions in developing a general understanding of the various program offerings, transfer requirements, and other transfer issues affecting CSI students.
  19. Handle student inquiries with accurate information and appropriate referrals to personnel in the areas of admissions, records and processing, financial aid and scholarships, Career and College Readiness Center, Counseling Services, Learning & Tutoring Commons, Campus Testing, Student Activities, Student Housing, Student Disability Services, faculty and more.
  20. Assist in the development and maintenance of advising projects and outcomes assessment.
  21. In coordination with the College of Southern Idaho’s Office of Instructional Administration, develop and deliver advising training to staff, faculty, and major advisors.
  22. Collaboratively work in a contributory manner with community-based organizations and outside serving agencies regarding programs and services available to students.
  23. Maintain student confidentiality and records following office, college, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies.
  24. Handle in a constructive, non-disruptive manner the multiple tasks, organizational and interpersonal changes and/or stresses that may exist in the employee’s daily work setting, work processes, dealings with other personnel, and supervision.
  25. Acts with integrity and upholds the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) core values.
  26. Convey by words and actions the values of the College of Southern Idaho.
  27. Accept and perform, in a timely and effective manner, work assignments that are outside the normal routine.
  28. Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends especially during peak periods.
  29. Must be willing to travel during registration periods to area advising/recruitment events.
  30. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Education Minimum Requirements:

Associate degree or some college from a regionally accredited university, and equivalent experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience Minimum Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to meet the duties and responsibilities in the job description.
  • Two or more years of experience involving exceptional student/customer service.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Knowledge and Ability Requirements:

  • Ability to assess individual student needs and exercise sound judgment (related to educational needs, not personal counseling intervention).
  • Strong event planning/coordination skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills and ability to represent the college in a positive way to diverse populations
  • Strong focus on student success.
  • Flexible and able to work on multiple tasks at any given time.
  • Ability to handle complaints and problem solve under pressure.
  • Ability to interpret, follow, and implement work policy.
  • Excellent listener.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Strong computer skills and technical knowledge.
  • Willingness to receive additional training to improve job skill set.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
