Overview



USC’s Neely Center for Ethics and Technology is seeking to hire a?Supervising Computer Scientistto join our staff.?This role is responsible for overseeing the scientific research initiatives at the Neely Center as well as directing operations of the teams responsible for developing and advancing ethical technology principles in the business community. This includes three primary areas of work. 



This individual will direct the development of the social and electronic infrastructures necessary for ongoing polling and data collection to assess the effects of social media on well-being and healthy democracies. This project will put Marshall on the map as the premier source of information on the benefits and harms stemming from leading social media platforms. 



The role involves the development and implementation of a curriculum for executives and MBAs focused on the business, science, and ethics of new technologies. This will include recruitment of leading academics and technology leaders who will contribute portions of the curriculum. Also included in this program is the development of an MBA Tech Fellows program consisting of the most promising MBA students from elite business schools around the world (in partnership with UC Berkeley). 



This role involves the oversight of a growing staff of paid and volunteer workers who are advancing the impact of the Neely Center through science and outreach. Additional requirements include grant writing and securing donations, conducting media interviews, compliance reporting, and reconciling expense reports.?



Reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Neely Center, the Chief Data Scientist and Director of Operations will work in collaboration with directors of centers and institutes at USC and other leading universities, technologists at technology companies, and policy leaders to achieve the partnerships necessary to achieve the above projects. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail, strong time management skills, and strong interpersonal skills. Deep knowledge of the social sciences and inside experience working in technology companies are a must. Demonstrable understanding of the unique challenges and importance of integrating the business side of technology with the ethical side is also a must.

Responsibilities and Duties


  • Manage center staff, postdoctoral scholars, and volunteers

  • Develop and maintain a data collection and polling platform

  • Build and maintain strategic networks of behavioral scientists, technologists, and MBA Tech Fellows

  • Develop curriculum on business and ethics of technology

  • Lead fundraising and outreach efforts

  • Organize conferences and events

  • Conduct media interviews

  • Promote an environment that fosters inclusive relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions through ideas, words, and actions that uphold the principles of the USC Code of Ethics.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing priorities and fluctuating workloads

  • Experience in a higher education environment, preferably in the area of business

  • 5+ years of experience in the tech industry, ideally with a focus on improving technology’s impact on society at a major tech platform

  • Ability to work effectively with tech business leaders as well as researchers in academia

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of non-profit and/or startup environments

  • Experience in Data Science and AI with demonstrable for-profit or scientific impact

  • Research publication record related to ethics and/or the psychology of technology

  • Demonstrated ability to drive press articles

  • Knowledge of AI and experience interacting and communicating with senior administration and faculty

  • Directly related program management experience

  • Ability to manage sponsored projects and fundraisers



Minimum Qualifications


  • Minimum Education: Doctorate; Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

  • Minimum Experience: 7 years

  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Advanced degree in computer science or related field such as solid state physics ormicroelectronics engineering. Supervisory skills. Demonstrated record of outstandingresearch contributions and experience in an area of computer science, technicalproficiency, exceptional creativity, successful collaboration with others, and independentthought. Demonstrated reputation as an emerging leader in field with sustainedperformance and accomplishment. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize researchdirections, exert technical leadership, communicate technical ideas, coordinate individualcontributions to a research program, and present research plans and results in a manner that will elicit favorable funding actions.
