Job Description
 

The University of Missouri (MU) NextGen Biomedical Informatics Team highly motivated individuals with a passion for data-driven scientific discovery, improving healthcare, and informatics. This postdoctoral fellow is expected to undertake research under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, help develop informatics capabilities and support the supervision of any students who may be assisting with the research. The postdoctoral fellow will also engage in collaborative research to develop data-driven solutions, integrate and evaluate effective clinical decision support, and fully exploit the EHR and administrative data as a real-world-data platform for generating real-world-evidence. The job duties include:

  •  Undertaking research collaboratively and independently in the intersection of health informatics, data science and artificial intelligence.
  • Producing research reports and/or publications for dissemination to the wider academic community
  • Conducting analysis and design input/content with informatics technical staff, other clinical translational science collaborators, and national translational resources to streamline investigator access to translational and administrative resources.
  • Coordinating and providing informatics support to internal and external researchers and affiliates.
  • In collaboration with Institutional Review Board personnel, evaluate regulatory requirements, data repository contents and delivery systems, and researcher specifications to provide de-identified or identified data (where appropriate) to investigators and their research teams.
  • Maintaining clinical/translational knowledge bases/resources aligned with standard terminologies/ontologies so as to enhance accessibility and interoperability of our resources with national research objectives.
  • Ensuring the integrity and security of institutional data. Follow change management procedures. Adhere to confidentiality and security policies and procedures. Test and verify accuracy of data. Provides adequate security through identification of user types in conjunction with the user department. Performs design reviews and technical reviews when appropriate.  
  • Providing guidance and support to any students associated with the project, as well as contributing to relevant teaching activities within or beyond the department.
  • Performing any other duties relevant to the program of research.

Qualifications
 
  • Doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, social science, data science, informatics, mathematics, computer science or a related field required. Proficiency in developing analytical solution in Python or R (or comparable software), Proficiency in relational databases and data warehousing and applied knowledge of SQL against big data, Proven skills in statistical modeling, machine learning and data mining, as well as ability to design and prototype scalable models to help answer research questions, Extensive research experience in the relevant subject area of the research project, Experience of writing to publication standard or independently producing other research outputs, ability to work on multiple, concurrent projects, perform a variety of tasks; and ability to quickly adapt to and handle changing priorities, the ability to promote effective teamwork in a rapidly changing multidisciplinary research environment; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, previous teaching experience, experience in the manipulation and analysis of large datasets (over 1 million patients, 1 billion observations) in cloud environments (e.g. Amazon Web Services) and familiarity with working in a LINUX environment, Thorough understanding of the software development lifecycle and experienced in analysis, design, development, coding, testing, debugging and documentation of SAS based solutions, Knowledge of clinical information systems and biomedical informatics, clinical research, and translational resources such as UMLS, Common Data Model, i2b2, REDCap, clinical trial systems, and human subjects research processes (IRB), knowledge of national data model standards and terminologies, Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, Qlikview, power BI or other comparable applications, experience with implementing or developing Natural language Processing (NLP) techniques to generate insights from big text corpus (e.g., clinical notes),
  • Informatics research experience with clinical, research, and medical administrative systems as demonstrated by an appropriate record of peer-reviewed publications, prior work experience in healthcare and/or healthcare claims analysis (i.e. Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance), experience with working in a cloud-based environment and developing cloud computing techniques
