ABOUT MAKING WAVES FOUNDATION

Making Waves Foundation is a private operating foundation located in Richmond, California. With a unique focus on college attendance and graduation, Making Waves Foundation has supported historically underrepresented and underserved students in pursuing their college graduation and career goals for more than 30 years. The foundation supports Making Waves Academy, a public charter school in Richmond, California, educating more than 1,100 students, and leads a college success program, known as the College and Alumni Program, or CAP, which provides coaching, scholarships, financial and career support for more than 500 college students as well as a network for more than 500 Wave-Maker alumni.

Our unique, holistic educational model supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and financially on their journey to, through, and beyond college. In 2020, Making Waves Foundation launched a new ten-year strategic plan centered on increasing the effectiveness of our existing program and expanding programming to reach more students across Contra Costa County in the Bay Area.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE SUCCESS COACHING

The Director of College Success Coaching (DCSC) facilitates continuous improvement and student success through a consistent team utilization of the coaching team frameworks (Wave-Maker Success and GRADDS). The DCSC is a member of the College & Alumni Program (CAP) leadership team which creates long-term strategies to accomplish CAP outcomes and key results focused on timely graduation as well as higher student retention and college graduation rates and career preparation. The DCSC guides the coaching team in their work with college students, helping create and document coach training materials to ensure that consistent, efficient workflows are in place for coaching productivity and performance. The position guides the coaching team through data analysis in partnership with the Impact Team, sets the vision for and executes professional development to build skills and drive impact, and owns the alignment of programming work with Making Waves Academy to ensure a smooth transition of Wave-Makers from high school to college. The Director of Coaching Services will manage a Senior Manager of Coaching Services and 1-2 College Coaches.

Within 6-12 months in the role, a successful candidate will have:

  • Strengthened team culture and morale
  • Collaborated with the Director of Financial Services and the Senior Manager of Early Career and Alumni to strengthen program integration; specifically, implemented the Wave-Maker Success Framework and a process to support a cohesive high-school-to-college transition for MWA Wave-Makers.
  • Collaborated on the creation of a training plan for the Coaching Services team and at least three resulting professional development experiences will have occurred.

The Director of College Success Coaching s is a full-time, exempt role, and will be eligible to receive:

  • Salary: A competitive base salary range of $99,200-$148,800 based on requisite work experience and performance during the interview process. In line with our commitment to equity, fairness, and transparency, we have adopted a no salary negotiation policy. We understand the historical inequities created by salary negotiations and believe in offering a starting salary that is fair and grounded in evidence collected during a clear, competency-aligned hiring process.
  • Time off: 51 total days off per fiscal year (a combination of company-paid holidays, vacation, sick, and personal time).
  • Medical benefits: 100% employer-paid medical (Kaiser HMO Platinum), vision, and dental benefits for the full-time staff member and a spouse/domestic partner or dependent child(ren).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of College Success Coaching's primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing and inclusive team (30%)
    • Set vision for and implement systems, processes, and rituals to cultivate a high performing, inclusive team (e.g., consistent 1:1 check-ins, team meetings, clear communication, etc.)
    • Set clear expectations for direct reports and empower them to lead their teams with a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
    • Establish a culture of consistent, bi-directional feedback; execute and own annual review and performance development conversations with direct reports
    • Set the vision for and partner with the ED of CAP and VP of Talent to execute a yearly professional development arc for team members
    • Set the vision and develop a scope and sequence to implement training for the coaching team
    • Interview and onboard new team members
  • Set and execute a vision for integrated program design and continuous improvement to increase student success (40%)
    • Set the vision for and manage through layers to execute on key student programming, including student orientation, onboarding, and all coaching offerings
    • Regularly review data dashboards of student and coach outcomes to define strengths in performance and priorities for improvement
    • Set ambitious outcomes for student and coach success and work closely with VP of Impact to consistently drive data-driven program refinement and evolution
    • Determine strategies with the team to improve student outcomes in student retention, graduation, and career preparation
    • Develop team structures that support regular data reflection on student progress and differentiated student supports
    • Articulate priorities for program-specific staff professional development and develop an aligned scope and sequence to deliver learning experiences for coaches to grow their practice
    • Work in collaboration with the team at MWA to ensure student knowledge and connection for a smooth transition to higher education
    • Partner with the Senior Manager of Early Career and Alumni to integrate career coaching into the model for Wave-Makers
  • Align coaching department processes and data systems to support efficient workflow and program outcomes (20%)
    • Work in partnership with the IT department, the Impact Team, and any consultants as needed for Salesforce development and reporting
    • Set systems and expectations for the team towards meeting operational calendar deadlines
    • Work in partnership with the Operations and Impact teams to ensure that data collection is smooth, and team has insight and clear expectations about how to use it for program improvement
  • Lead and support cross-functional projects to maximize collective impact across the organization (10%)
    • Coordinate with the CAP leadership team to ensure smooth functioning of the entire CAP team and delivery of high-quality student services
    • Work in partnership with members of the Marketing & Storytelling, Impact, Development, Finance, and IT team on cross-functional projects and outcomes
    • Work in partnership with member of Making Waves Academy on program alignment and student transitions
    • Participate in organization-wide systems, processes, and rituals (e.g., annual and quarterly goal setting, employee engagement surveys, All Hands); commit to providing feedback to improve our work in the future
    • Contribute to the development of a growing, fast-paced organization, including participation in events and programming as well as database and technology oversight and maintenance
    • Prioritize Professional Growth: Research, schedule, and participate in professional development opportunities in service of their professional growth and impact on the organization

KEY EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

What you have accomplished (required):

  • 8 years of relevant experience with 3+ years of successful team management experience, including setting goals, providing coaching, and guiding professional development
  • An advanced degree in a related field of study, including education, counseling, etc., or equivalent working experience
  • Experience working cross-functionally to achieve ambitious goals
  • Experience partnering with first generation college students or working with historically underrepresented youth
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced technology skills: Salesforce, MS Office: Excel, Word, and use of both databases and shared networks
  • Experience leading and managing complex change at a growing or evolving organization

Other things you might have accomplished (preferred):

  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Created programming for high school and/or college students
  • Worked in the college access or success field
  • Experience building and improving team morale
