General Notes

The Oden Institute is an organized research unit that fosters interdisciplinary programs in computational sciences and engineering, computational medicine, computational geosciences, mathematical modeling, applied mathematics, data science, software engineering, and computational visualization.

Purpose

To conduct research in forward and inverse problems, algorithms for parallel scientific computing, high performance computing on modern hardware, scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimization under uncertainty, and optimal experimental design with applications to large-scale problems in the geosciences and engineering within the Center for Computational Geosciences and Optimization.

Responsibilities

Develop, analyze, and implement advanced parallel numerical algorithms for wave propagation and the related large-scale inverse problems, scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimization under uncertainty, and optimal experimental design, and apply these algorithms to the solution of challenging large-scale geoscience and engineering problems.

Write proposals, annual reports, and final research reports to research sponsors including government agencies, industry, and foundations.

Attend conferences, workshops, and meetings and make research presentations.

Author scientific journal articles, conference proceedings, manuscripts, and other technical reports for submission to journals and conferences.

Advise and supervise graduate and undergraduate students and other researchers.

Provide guest lectures in courses as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science or related area with strong expertise in numerical analysis, scientific computing, PDEs, finite element and finite difference methods, solvers and preconditioners, time integration schemes, PDE-constrained optimization, scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, inverse problems, and continuum mechanics. Extensive experience in C++, MPI, CUDA, large-scale computing, and geophysical applications. Knowledge on modern computer architecture and software development tools. Must have good command of the English language and excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to work with computational and domain scientists and engineers. Minimum 3 years postdoctoral experience.

Salary Range:

$70,000

May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of keyboard around workstation.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
