JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Neuro-Oncology and Skull Base Surgery, in Hershey, PA is seeking a post-doctoral scholar. As part of our Division’s overarching mission to better understand the biology of brain tumors and develop advanced therapeutics, our main translational research focus centers on the interrogation of the tumor microenvironment. This is achieved through liquid biopsy approaches, with a particular focus on the cerebrospinal fluid, and early phase (Phase 0/1) surgical clinical trials. Our goal is to develop proteogenomic diagnostic and prognostic signatures – combining tumor tissue, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid – alongside establishing pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics parameters of novel therapeutics against malignant brain tumors.

Similar to our clinical philosophy, we adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to research which represents a collaborative effort between the Departments of Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Neuroradiology, Pathology, Clinical Pharmacology, and the Basic Sciences. Strengths of our Division include membership in the International Neoplastic Meningitis Registry (NeMeRe), a robust clinically-annotated Neuroscience biorepository housing a large number of matched tumor tissue, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid, a prospective brain tumor registry, membership in the International Radiosurgery Registry, and being one of the few centers conducting microdialysis-based studies of novel therapies for brain tumors. In addition to these resources, the prospective post doctoral scholar would have immediate involvement in a pipeline of investigator-initiated and industry-supported clinical trials within the Division. This position will report to Dr. Alireza Mansouri, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in clinical and translational research, proficiency in scientific writing, and the ability to integrate and synthesize large volumes of data towards novel discoveries and generation of hypotheses. General Responsibilities/Duties will include:

  • Design and conduct research experiments in the field of neuro-oncology
  • Assist with the collection, processing, and storage of biological specimens, including liquid biopsy samples
  • Assist in the collation of clinical data for our biorepository and various clinical registries
  • Collect, prepare and analyze research data using statistical methods, and integrate findings with the scientific literature
  • Take on a leading role in managing the research portfolio of the Division, including:
    • Proactively seeking out and assist in grant opportunities
    • Lead efforts in manuscript writing
    • Assist with submission of research applications for relevant regulatory approvals
    • Present at relevant national and international research conferences for the presentation of scientific work

The post doctoral scholar will be encouraged and supported in initiating and developing independent lines of inquiry as well.

Candidates should hold either PhD or MD degree at time of start.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire.

Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University polices.
