The Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics/School of Basic and Medical Biosciences is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biochemistry.

The post will be embedded in the highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment of the Randall Centre, and the successful candidate will join an interactive group of investigators with expertise in either one or more of these areas: X-ray crystallography, NMR, cryo-electron microscopy, mass spectroscopy and other biophysical and molecular approaches.

We are looking for applicants with an expanding research profile and an interest in developing a strong, internationally recognised research programme which combines biochemical and biophysical techniques with molecular and cellular biology approaches.

Examples of relevant research topics include but are not limited to:

a) enzymatic cellular regulatory mechanisms including membrane transport, metabolic regulation, secretory processes, and cytoskeletal function;

b) structure-function relationships in the cell including small-molecule modulation of biochemical activity;

c) proteomics approaches and protein interaction targeting;

d) research covering disease association is encouraged.

The successful applicant will work in a strong, fundable research area which will enhance the world-class research portfolio of the Randall Centre and will have the potential to bridge research interests between Departments within the School of Basic and Medical Biosciences (Cell and Molecular Biophysics, Molecular and Medical Genetics, Gene Therapy and

Regenerative Medicine, Dermatology and Human and Applied Physiological Sciences). The successful candidate will foster collaborative possibilities with research and education across the wider Faculty of Medicine and beyond. They will ideally have, or be able to develop, industrial collaborations and will stimulate research partnerships between academia and the private sector.

The appointee will be a skilled educator and contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching across our Biochemistry teaching department programmes. We are interested in candidates, who are keen to teach on biochemistry modules relevant to their skills’ set and representing strategic areas for expansion of the curriculum.

You should hold a PhD in an appropriate area, have an excellent publication record, experience in attracting peer reviewed research grant funding and experience in undergraduate and/or post graduate teaching.

Key responsibilities

• Provide academic leadership (according to level of experience) in Molecular Biochemistry.

• Establish, develop and sustain a nationally/internationally competitive, externally-funded research programme consistent with, or complementary to the interests of the Department/School/Faculty research strategies.

• Maintain a consistent, outstanding track record of publication (typically 2-4 research publications (depending on appointment level) over a rolling five year period that include world leading or internationally excellent work, as first, last and/or corresponding author).

• Contribute to teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students and curriculum development.

• Plan, organise and deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities (e.g. lecturing, project supervision and tutorials) and, at Senior Lecturer level, leading on at least one substantive module/programme.

• Supervise and train postgraduate and undergraduate students to ensure their effective development.

• Supervise and train research and technical staff employed on the post holder’s research projects to ensure their effective development.

• Engage in the dissemination of research through knowledge transfer, outreach, continuing professional development, public engagement etc.

• Contribute fully to academic life and strategic planning across the Department/School and, where required/appropriate to the wider strategic planning processes at Faculty and University level at a level appropriate to appointment.

• Identify strategic development opportunities in teaching and research and contribute to the development of these ideas.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria - Grade 8, Senior Lecturer

1. PhD/DPhil Degree

2. Significant expertise in the field of Molecular Biochemistry relevant to the post

3. Significant experience of delivery of undergraduate teaching in biochemistry with course development, lectures and tutorials

4. Record of attracting peer reviewed research grant funding or fellowships

5. Outstanding track record of publication

6. Ability to define and lead a research area, taking responsibility for planning and undertaking own work.

7. Ability to work well as an effective member of a wider multi-disciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice

8. Experience in supervising and developing research students and/or research staff.

9. Experience in contribution to academic administration

Desirable criteria - Grade 8, Senior Lecturer

1. Experience of teaching programme development

2. Experience of working in collaborative projects across disciplines

3. Experience of serving on professional scientific boards and committees

Essential Criteria - Grade 7, Lecturer

1. PhD/DPhil Degree

2. Expertise in the field of Molecular Biochemistry relevant to the post

3. Experience of undergraduate and/or post graduate teaching in biochemistry

4. Record of publication in peer reviewed journals

5. Demonstrable contribution to developing peer reviewed funding/fellowship applications.

6. Ability to define and lead a research area, taking responsibility for planning and undertaking own work.

7. Ability to work well as an effective member of a wider multi-disciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice

Desirable criteria - Grade 7, Lecturer

1. Experience of teaching programme and/or curriculum development.

2. Record of attracting independent peer reviewed research grant funding

3. Experience in supervising and developing research students and/or staff
